Hi all, I am normally found on the the 80 forum as that is where my experience is however, I was in the market for an 80 and a friend offered me a 4runner I think he said 3.0 litre?

With as little bias as possible....yeh I know:D why should I go for the 4 runner as I have zero experience with them instead of the 80?

regards

Dave

"Cat in with the pigeon question 4 runner?"

Nice title ambiguity. I'm sure "Cat Among the Pigeons" would have received more response :D

"Hmmm two replies from the 80 forum and all quiet on the 4 runner side, I also note the 4 runner side is shared with other models so perhaps not so much support or as popular as an 80?"

Could also be due to this is the wrong 4runner section, as you're referring to the 2nd generation, and this is the 3rd generation area where they had 3.4L. So, back to shopping for an 80. Maybe Burton will provide you with the direction you desire.

Yeh but the ambiguity made you look right?

Anyway, by you pointing out about the different generation 4runner's just shows how much I don't know about them.

Thanks for that, I have one or two guys point out that they are quite hardy beasts and the only reservation's mentioned thus far is the IFS.

So many thanks for your guidance,

regards

Dave

It does seem my doubts have been reinforced as to giving the 4runner a miss, it seems they are not truly bad cars but the running costs seem to be higher and the IFS is not up to snuff.

I think this thread can go to sleep,

I have no problems with the IFS, just depends on what you plan on using it for.

The use it to set the car up for serious expedition work, heavily laden water/fuel/supplies ect and I think the IFS may not be up to it? The LC also has more space I am told for packing ect.

I would think the LC has more interior space, and the components would almost certainly hold up better for that type of activity.

Heavy expedition,:hhmm: guessing you may be wanting to explore that continent to the south. Get a diesel 80 if possible. Especially for fuel availability. Also it has a heavier carrying weight.

I have a pretty nicely setup 1991 4Runner with a built up 3.0 liter.
I rebuilt the motor, and had the head gasket issues dealt with (the machine shop was able to fill in material into the block where the head gaskets fail). And we put in forged internals, custom camshafts, oversized valves, ported and polished intake, bored out throttle body, and a free flowing exhaust. Basically made the motor as bullet proof as possible. I've been able to drive 80 down the freeway with the truck full of people and some freeride bikes (read: HEAVY) on the roof, with enough power to pass.
the truck scoots pretty well

Retrospect such that it is, I should have put in the 3.4 liter motor instead.

If I were looking for a newer rig, I'd be looking at a third gen 4Runner with the 3.4 motor. Of all the rigs, 80 series, 100 series, and third gen 4Runner, I think the 4Runner is the better rig (more came with lockers, more transmission options, lighter, gets better fuel economy), provided you don't need to room of the 80 or 100.

Thanks again all for the input, the car will be heavily laden but there are other factors to consider. I need the space so if the 4runner is smaller than the 80 then that goes in favour of the 80. I would choose diesel without doubt the consumption of the petrol 6 of the 80 is quite frightening when you consider the cost of fuel over here in Spain. I will also be fitting an internal heater that runs from the diesel tank. I have plenty of experience working on the 80 as well although having said that most manufacturers follow a certain engineering 'plan' so I doubt the 4runner is any more complicated to work on?

Thanks again

As a 4runner guy let me help you decide.....Get a 80....

3.0 Gas or Diesel?

If it's the latter, we won't have a clue what to tell you... This is predominantly a US forum here, with VERY few members outside the US. 80's tech might be different...

We do not get ANY Diesels here... Just so you know...

And as a 4Runner guy, let me help you... Get a 4Runner! :flipoff2:

It may just be the one I've driven, but you can keep the handling and 13MPG... No thanks...

And what do you recover an 80 with? An M4 Sherman?

did Spain even get the gas 3.0?

did Spain even get the gas 3.0?

Not to my knowledge but I'm buying from the UK anyway where I have been offered a couple of diesel versions but to put this thread to bed I have now decided to go for the 80 and as we 'speak' I am bidding for one on eblag.

lol!! copy cat! :p

Warren Miller...

To everybody else, I'm pretty sure this dudes talking bout a diesel . So the 3.0h bashing can stop...

Oh, and Dave, don't get the 3.0 gas V6.... :flipoff2:

I have owned my 22re 5spd mini truck (essentially a 4 runner without a back seat) since it was new and love it. I was looking for a family friendly wheeler (with back seat) and was was really wanting a compact 4 runner but "settled" for an larger 80. The price of the 80 is comparable to the 4 runner until you take into account swapping in a better engine (replacing the 3.0 slow in the 4 runner) and swapping in solid axle (80 already has one) and installing lockers (80 has this option). Add those expenses to the price of a 4 runner and the 80 is a bargain. It also turns out the 80 can get crowded for a family of 5 (plus a dog) with gear. I cant imagine fitting into a 4 runner after enjoying the extra space in the 80. I still have the mini but it is just for solo adventure (much like a sports car or motorcycle).
