I have a pretty nicely setup 1991 4Runner with a built up 3.0 liter.
I rebuilt the motor, and had the head gasket issues dealt with (the machine shop was able to fill in material into the block where the head gaskets fail). And we put in forged internals, custom camshafts, oversized valves, ported and polished intake, bored out throttle body, and a free flowing exhaust. Basically made the motor as bullet proof as possible. I've been able to drive 80 down the freeway with the truck full of people and some freeride bikes (read: HEAVY) on the roof, with enough power to pass.
the truck scoots pretty well
Retrospect such that it is, I should have put in the 3.4 liter motor instead.
If I were looking for a newer rig, I'd be looking at a third gen 4Runner with the 3.4 motor. Of all the rigs, 80 series, 100 series, and third gen 4Runner, I think the 4Runner is the better rig (more came with lockers, more transmission options, lighter, gets better fuel economy), provided you don't need to room of the 80 or 100.
