I was installing my 5.29s and in the front diff the crush sleeve is cast. Is this a crush sleeve eliminator or something? I did a sas on my 4runner and this was in the front axle that I put in. Is this a factory thing? The rear had a standard crush sleeve but it had been re-geared before.

It'd not a crush sleeve. It is a spacer that you use with shims to set the preload. No crush involved.

Yup, it's a solid spacer, not a crush sleeve. Preferred in hard wheeling situations, as a crush sleeve can in certain situations crush a bit more, you lose the preload on the bearings, and the diff will eat the gears.

I have them in both of my e-lockers.

dont know why you would want to use on of those

So that your pinion bearing pre-load does not change, resulting in a destroyed ring and pinion set. When you put a gear set under severe load, a crush sleeve can crush some more, resulting in loose pinion bearings, and a pinion able to walk into the carrier, which will destroy the pinion.

OEM # is 41231-39010

Marlin, along with other companies have been making/selling a solid spacer for the Toyota 4cyl, 8” and the V6/high pinion 8” center sections for some time now.

I have seen them for sale by marlin and that is why I was wondering. I was fairly certain that this diff hadn't been molested. I knew it wasn't a true crush sleeve but I wasn't sure on what to call it other than that. I am thinking about re-using it in my front diff since my rear is already installed.
Thanks for the help!

Toyota put them in some diffs from the factory, the shims are available from the dealer. Does the sleeve look like this? Picture stolen from; http://www.gearinstalls.com

Yep, that's the piece. It is still available from the dealership as well as the shims. I keep a couple on the shelf all the time for upgrading from crush sleeves when doing a diff.

That's it. I guess I will need to find some shims for it so that I can re-use it with my new gears. Thanks!

IIRC, Toyota stopped using the solid spacer in the 8” diff around 1983. Anything after that will have a crush-sleeve from the factory.....
