ive had this pig for a couple years now and ive never heard this thing turn on. never!
is it something that activates on occasion when you shut these pigs off, or only when running hot ? if so i live in south florida lots of stop and go hot steamy gridlock havnt heard it yet . why ? could it be a po thing ? need help gents what should i look for to diagnose the lack of cooling from this fan?

Make sure the thing is still wired up. Do a search of the archives and you will find many comments and pics about the carb fans.

In a couple of years, it should have turned on a couple of times. There are some simple tests in the FSM, Haynes, and Chilton manuals. My temp sensor for the fan was toast, so I just hard wired it to a switch, since I know when it should and shouldn't come on anyways. Cheaper, easier, and it doesn't hurt to have it on more than it needs to be.

Mine comes on every time I shut the engine off. Even last winter, I remember pulling into a parking lot in the snow and when I got out, I heard it on. It should run up to 30 minutes. Check your power wire for the unit. The relay goes from the fan to the exhaust manifold and is connected on the underside of the manifold. Halfway through the wire is a green plug connector. It is not uncommon for the little wire to get burnt up. Do a search. This was covered (I would guess) less than a month or two ago.

After checking the wiring, etc., take the fan out, take it apart and clean/lube it. Mine had a piece of foam stuck to the blades of the fan that kept it from freely turning (don't ask me how it got in there, I have no clue).

After removing the obstruction and oiling up the fan motor, the thing kicked on like a champ and has been running after every shutdown since. This is one thing you want to be working.

is it a 60 or 62? my 60 and 40's turn on everytime I shut it off, ,my 62's and fj80 almost never turn on.

They seem to be touchy!

For instance, on my 85 FJ60 the fan comes on the second i turn the motor off, EVERY SINGLE time that i turn the motor off and usually runs for about 3-5 mins!

When i got the rig the fan wire was severed and it drove and ran fine, however it was VERY hard to start once i tried to start it again. The heat of the motor would evaporate all fuel out of the carb and made it hard to start! Once the fan was fixed, it starts up right away, no problem, every time.

Does yours do this?

There are 4 basic parts to this system. Fan, sensor, relay, and a ~20 minute timer located behind the passenger kick panel(what I've been told). When I repaired my system I actually timed the circuit, tested the timer. Darn thing was within 30 seconds. Where's the circuit diagram ? Dunno, haven't found it yet in a FSM. I must be blind. Archives here are best bet.

If you find a circuit diagram with locations, post it please.

Cheers,
Cahil

Does anyone have a diagrahm of this by any chance?

I looked and looked for a circuit diagram and locator. Remember there are 4 main items here. Fan, sensor, relay, and the 20 minute timer.

I started to ask around to about a circuit diagram and all I got was dumb looks(over the phone).

*Love* to have a circuit diagram and locator if someone has it.

Landpimp aske the key question.......60 or 62?

From what I've read the 60 acts a lot different than the 62. I can't attest to the 60,
but I can to the 62.

I have an 88 .....Freeborn Red also....Gorgeous truck!!!!

Anyhow it is acting normally according to all the 3FE guys and it rarely kicks on.

It "looks" at the temp sensor to determine whether or not to kick on. It is rare for it
to kick on right when the engine is shut off. It has occasionally on really hot days when
the A/C has been running and the engine working hard.

Usually it will only kick on in warm weather (85F ??) and doesn't come on until the engine has
been off for a few minutes and the temp under the hood builds up.

I'm guessing that it uses the temp sensor to shut off as well since it never runs for the same amount of time on the 62. If I open the hood and let the heat out it shuts off much sooner.
Mine never runs more than 6 minutes or so.

most of the time the problem is the temp sensor connection. The sensor is on the right underside of the manifold and is connected by one wire from the fan itself. Usually the wire connector falls off/gets burned off/pulled off. Check there first. If thats not it, pull the fan motor apply power to the red wire and ground the black one and see if the fan is still working. My money is on the temp sensor connector however.

FYI: the purpose of the fan is to keep the engine from vaporlocking between starts and also makes "hot starts" eaiser. I believe the temp switch is 130 or 135deg switch, when your manifold is over 135 and the car is turned off the fan kicks on until the temp goes below 130. It may not help much where you live but at high altitude like colorado it is essential because the boiling point of water (and fuel) is lower at higher altitudes, thus making vapor lock more common.

How did foam get stuck in there?

:D

Seriously though - Mike - can we add some of these cooling fan threads to the FAQ? I'll search them out later if you want. Let me know...

When I had a 40 and the electrickery of the timer or temp ensor quit, I wired up a lit rocker switch to that fan. I figured if if was going to be a long enough stop where I didn't want to forget leaving it on then it would be a long enough stop not to need it....I never once flattend the battery 'cause of leaving it on....
