Last week I was in the field and used the cooler for my lunches/drinks. One gallon ziplock bag of ice kept my food cool (even with opening the cooler multiple times during each day) from Sunday night to Thursday morning.
Its cooled down here lately, so I can't do a honest test of how many days it will hold ice for in 100* weather obviously, but If you guys want, I can take one of my other coolers and do a direct comparison. 10 lb bag of ice in each cooler and see how many days they can go.

Okay i decided to do the test. Olds cooler vs new cooler. I'll post up each night how much ice is left..

First Day. Coolers have not been opened since last night. Bout 1.5" of water in the Coleman. None in the canyon..

That side by side comparison says it all. Look how much thicker the walls on the canyon cooler are than the Coleman.

Mace-I am assuming you have a refrigerator?

If so, all this talk of coolers is kind of moot. If not, save your cash until you buy a real refrigerator. You won't look back.

I have found that a small cooler will hold drink ice for the first 1-2 days of any trip. After that, it's a crapshoot determined by the ambient temp. "5 day" coolers work better than cheapo crap coolers. The Yeti and Canyon are likely a bit better but so what.

Real refrigeration, beats any amount of insulated ice, and you avoid the soggy food, the blood water and all the other nastiness that comes with a cooler and ice. And that's not to mention the far superior space efficiency of refrigeration.

I have an arb fridge, and for long camping trips in the 60, it's great. However, for trips in the 40 where I'm doing very stupid things, there is too great a chance of damaging the arb.

The thing i like about this cooler is the quality, durability and ability to you're it down easily. Metal latches mean i won't lose everything in my cooler when i tip the cruiser on it's side.

I really like my arb, but i got this cooler for a different use than the arb.

A weekend outing in the desert around Vegas is a lot different than a week outing in the Sierras. After a couple of days down there you are lucky to have more than tepid water in your cooler never mind ice. I can see where a better cooler would be of great advantage, especially in a 40 doing stupid s***.

Third night, bout .5" of water in the canyon. A good 3" in the bottom of the Coleman. Only about 20% of the ice is left in the Coleman.

Biggest deal, a beer pulled out if a water/ice chest is way colder and tastier than one pulled out of an arb. Dunno why, but the arb beers are just not as icy cold :)

Use the ARB to make ice for the other ice chests...:hillbilly:

yeah, cause it's easy to make ice while bouncing around on a trail..

ARB works awesome for food, or keeping things frozen. It's not so great at freezing things that I have seen.

4th night, I've got enough ice in the Coleman fire a scotch on the rocks. Canyon still has over half the ice in it

well I guess it depends .. wanna keep your food cold and dry .?
You forgot clean, I had to pick up all my beer and ice from the dirt at the bottom of Little Sluice one time. Nothing like granite dust and grit to flavor everything in your ice chest for the rest of the weekend. The advantage of a positive latch is not to be underrated.

still about a 1/4 bag of ice in the canyon.

Hello H8'rs
Mace suggested I introduce myself. I am a recovering Early Bronco nut and I am one of the owners of Canyon Coolers and we mostly wanted to say thank you for giving us a shot.

The brand is pretty new (almost 3 years old), but we got our start in the rafting community almost 10 years ago helping Outfitters and Guide companies with 220 mile trips. We generally like working with people that get their hands dirty and it has helped us create products that seem to have some value.

We are always looking to evolve and improve. I don't know if we are adding compressors anytime soon, but if you have features, sizes and design changes in mind that might benefit more H8'rs we are all ears.

You guys seem to be 'all custom' at this point in the obsession and maybe we need to be too but if there are generalizations to be made or needs not being met we want to know.

Critical dimensions to fit ?
Ideal Size on smaller coolers ?
Tie Down Needed ?
Mostly shorter trips ?

Thanks and keep your wheels right side down (if you want)

1 - Dimensions are all over the place for Land Cruisers.
2 - My opinion, 12-12oz cans some lunch meat and tall enough to fit a 2 Liter bottle upright, plus ice of course. It's nice if there is a tray to keep the meat out of the water.
3 - Definitely, no one wants a loaded ice chest to become a projectile inside their vehicle. One of the biggest frustrations with most ice chest is trying to find a way to secure them and still have access to the contents and keep them securely closed.
4 - For ice chest, probably shorter trips. For longer trips most guys will probably opt for a "real" refrigerator.*

*edit you should probably define "shorter" for some of my friends a week is a short trip.

Bought my dad one of these for Christmas unfortunately it was damaged in shipping and canyon coolers had fantastic customer service it was refreshing in this day and age. They will get my future business for sure. Can't wait to try the ol mans cooler out
