I'm in Alberta, I recently (April 2011) bought a 1991 HDJ81 and went to insure it with Meloche Monnex - I've been with them for the last 15 years and had 5 vehicles and 2 properties insured with them - they said as of last year they can only offer third party coverage on all RHD vehicles, no exceptions, old policies are grandfathered.

It was going to cost $455/yr for Monnex third party only, I shopped around and ended up with a policy brokered by Johnson Inc. which gave me fully comprehensive for $560/yr, $1,000 deductable.

Due to this Monnex lost my business on 4 vehicles.

I had trouble also getting insurance , what is third party insurance ? What if no one will insure these rigs , kinda scarry I'm about to sink a lot of money into mine and am having nightmares about having to find a old north american BJ and swap all my good parts over to it. I wonder if I could just swap frames and use the vin from the NA BJ to get insurance:clap:

I am covered by Meloche on some of my vehicles, Third party is simply liability insurance as well as its subset definitions. Their prices are good but you are right about the cutoff at a certain age for optional coverage. At one point they asked for an appraisal for my Miata. Okay fine, but three years later they wanted another appraisal. I just decided that it was a way to tell me that they really don't want that sort of business. It is a pain in the ass dealing with these guys because everytime you talk to their representatives they want to ask you the 20 questions about your licence status/life status whatever. It is annoying to say the least.

Fiddling around with your VIN might be cause to void your policy. It might be considered fraud. If you do it don't tell anyone. Isn't the VIN fastened to the dash under the window as well as the firewall of the cruiser? I wasn't aware that the frame is tagged or stamped the way older vehicles used to be. I think that the VIN is also on stamp or sticker fastened to the door pillar on the drivers side. Maybe that is the frame on a monocoque construction typical of newer vehicles.

mm sounds fun. How much would it cost to just put on one or two chain drives from a new installed left hand steering colum to a right hand steering shaft? That would mean new dash and new steering colum and new brake, throttle rods.

I see these cars drivers instructors cars with second steering wheels and pedals all the time.

OK third party is what I call PLPD then and this is all I have on my cruiser. If one swaps out the frame and the cowel and then swap in the parts I can't see how that would'n t be legal . People make changes to their vehicles all the time and its not a problem like adding a dulley axle under a truck , disel conversions etc...., although not to this extent of putting the steering wheel on the other side I don't see how its any different. I keep telling myself this to make me feel good about doing it when the time comes to mislead the DMV and insurance companys. .

I just spoke with my State Farm agent today and he quoted me $280 a month for an hdj81. I have no tickets and a clean record.

I guess I am going to call up Meloche Monnex and see what they can do for me.

Does anyone else have any ideas for insurance brokers?

I'm in Alberta and went with Johnson Inc (nfld company). No problems getting my '91 hdj81 insured this August.
It was actually fun(!?!) talking to the insurance guy and he had a lot of tips.

Just curious as I don't live in Canada: How is your insurance company finding out the vehicle is RHD in the first place?? Does it say so on your title??

VIN # is often a giveaway, and all the required documentation if it's a new import.

Interesting.

I insured an RHD vehicle (briefly) with State Farm here in the 'states. They had no idea from any of my info that it was RHD but I even told them it was and they said it didn't matter. Probably didn't even have a button for that on their computer. :)

What a difference a border makes.

The difference is when the auto industry has way to much control and is able to influence government to make real consumer choice difficult. In BC, they have no choice but to offer insurance. They can not unilaterally increase the rates without showing just cause. There last "study" was a statistical embarrassment to them. So now they are trying to identify each RHD so they can build a more solid statistical case against them. I am sure they will include every accident and claim regardless of fault or cause and try to make it appear that it was a problem resulting from the steering wheel location.
