This job should have taken 5 minutes but instead took 2hrs of fuss as I REALLY did not want to loose pieces of that crummy grommet and have to open the valve cover. After a lot of picking and prodding and twisting and an attempt at cutting I finally got it done, but what a PITA to get that hard and brittle old grommet out. I wonder if it is original, 26yrs old? Bumping this thread to add that what finally won the battle for me was a few drops of ATF on the grommet for lube. It loosened it right up and I was able to pry it up through the hole with needle nose pliers.
The old PCV valve rattles so it may have been OK but the grommet was so packed out that I was getting a lot of grimy blow-by on the surrounding engine parts. I believe that replacing it has also taken care of some unpleasant cold start odors. Very happy to have this done!
