This came off the front of a parts fj40.
The stickers on the winch itself are mostly missing and haven't found any markings. The only part of one sticker left shows Serial #: 10047.
It has a prestolite motor on it.
It was set up on a truck with a warn solenoid pack mounted under the hood.
It looks exactly like a heavy duty hydraulic winch I already own, but it's electric.
Has anyone ever seen this winch or know what it is.
Picture #1 is the winch from the front if your standing in front of the truck.
Picture #2 is from the back.
Picture #3 is the bottom.
It sits down between the framerails and the cable comes through the bumper like the 8274's.
It's very heavy and seems heavy duty and I want to put it on the front of my 40(might need beefier springs).

Also, please ignore that it's sitting in the back of a heep at the moment!

That thing is sweet! I know nothing about it, but the gear drive system looks really neat. If it works, run it!

That pretty much describes my truck exactly! It's all about function for me and price. At least knowing I have a dependable winch will let me put money into other mods, I'm sure I'll upgrade to a better one eventually.

Well, if you're going to use the sucker-
That motor looks like it the generic winch motor I used on my Belleview. Would not be suprised if it was the same.

Looks like the winch could use new seals. Might be worth opening it up and at least cleaning it out, getting some fresh lube in, and if you're feeling ambitious and have a full can of cannonball polish handy, new seals and bearings.

Just about any set of winch solenoids can be used. I helped a friend adapt a set of 4 $12 warn solenoids to operate his Milemarker, same could be done here.

Good luck!

Slow wormdrives are PIMP. I almost want to trade my 8274 for a husky. That winch is like the best of both worlds. :hillbilly:

Glad I don't wheel with you.

Just swapped my XD9000i for an 8274. Need more speed.

Wormdrive would be great for the occasional user, the "automatic brake" and low motor stress is nice, but the sloooow speed is not for me.

No idea on the winch. But you might want pull the motor and take to to a shop that rebuilds them. There is a place here in town that seems to be able to rebuild anything for under $100 bucks. I'm sure most large towns would have a place that could do it. You would know that the motor is solid and not shot at that point.

I'm definitely going to do that, i have a generator/starter guy thats great with old stuff, he built me a custom alternator for pretty cheap. This weekend I'm gonna tear the whole thing down for inspection and clean it up real nice. We hooked up power to it before it came off and it was turning one direction and the solenoids were clicking but not turning the other direction. That being said I'm sure the grounds were bad in the truck and it should be fine. I'll keep it posted up as I make progress with it. At this point i'm pretty sure it is a ramsey just not sure if it's 8 or 9k...

definutly looks like a pierce or desert dynamics , the ramseys don't have the rear support plate on the winch motor desert dynamics or pierce (same s*** different winch )

i have one sitting in my garage

even if it is in a state of disassembly .

my ramsey looks a lot different

Looks to me like an old Thor winch...I haven't seen one of those in 25+ years. As I recall, they are stout winches but also bit bulky and very heavy. If you don't winch often, you'll be grateful that you have it when you need it. But your front springs will pay a price and if you hook-up at least once every other outing you might be happier with something faster as well.

I appreciate all you guys helping out...i had never even heard of pierce or desert. It seems like all the worm gears I've seen run with the motor and worm gear underneath. This was mounted with the motor and gear on the top (the side the free wheel handle sticks up). Does that make a difference with lubrication? Also I'm going to tear it down and check all the components before I hook it up, what type of lubricants do you guys run inside these winches? Is it just grease, gear oil, etc???

the gear box should 100% be underneath and don't just run grease . my desert had some serious damage done to it by the previous owner because he ran grease in the worm box and ran the gear box on the top .

i fixed it all but it wasn't fun . sorta why it was free .

spur gear box oil - sae 20wt
worm gear box oil - ep 140
clutch housing or any other grease nipples -mp grease .
electric motor - what ever the hell you want - engine oil .

i would honestly probably just use atf instead of 20wt , 20 is hard to find atf will do a better job anyway . ep 140 in the worm box . grease everything else up good .

Pierce Sales - 9,000 lb 8" Complete Winch (12V)

its a good idea to upgrade the allen bolts under the input spur gear connecting the spur box to the worm box to grade 8's . and the metal backing plate for the motor to something thicker . ask me how i know .

my desert had a prestolite on it , not that there not a very common motor brand .

in my opinion These are industrial winches. If your going to use your winch 5, 10, 50 times a day, a Worm Drive winch is what you want. Worm drive winches are also the only winches which are designed to power a load out. it's slow but it won't get hot and melt synthetic line , it will winch all day long and come back for more .

personally there not that slow . just not 8274 speed , which is personally to much for me . i love worm drive winches , i wish i had this one

In a recovery situation I don't want to be in a hurry for anything. I see no reason for a winch to be blazing fast in that scenario. I think worm drive winches have a huge cool factor. Not sure why, but I'm nerdy about gears I guess.

I don't mean to put down the 8274 though, it definitely has the reliability and cool factor as well and I have nothing against the one I got. I just wouldn't say speed is a reason I like it.

the 8274 is a great winch , a spur gear winch is also an industrial unit . i wouldn't complain if i owned one thats for sure . my favorite thing about worm drives is the reaction they always get "holy crap" is generally said .

Quick Update

I stripped the winch down for inspection this weekend. On the inside it is stamped Viking 205. Mystery solved. Jeff Pierce from Pierce Winches also confirmed that it looks like a Viking. Do you guys know anything about them, I'm going to be looking for some parts. The main steel shaft running from the gear to the clutch has a crack in it. Fairly simple to machine if I have to go that way. Also the bearings on the worm gear were shredded (PO shouldn't have run it upside down! Everything else is in good shape.

it seems thats a trend with previous owners and worm drive winches .
