Can anyone help diagnose this...rattle?

I know, probably a bad question to ask. But if anyone in Vic area would cast an ear at this engine, I'm trying to find out what is making the godawful racket. 1 HZ engine.

My friend Brian and I got the injector pump off, fixed and on, bled lines, fired up all okay. did have to advance timing a bit to get an idle.

But about 10-15 seconds after starting up, the sound of a solid metal rattle comes up from the engine bay. it isn't a valve sort of sound, but we pulled the valve cover, watched the cam, couldn't hear any valve rattle from the head.

he thinks it is a big end bearing.

while the truck used to make quite a racket for 30 seconds after starting, i don't remember it being this bad. it hasn't run for three weeks while the injector pump was down.

so, i figure maybe do a compression test next, but anyone that can shed any light or swing by for a listen is encouraged.

cheers,

Yeah Ill have a listen Chris. The first thing we'll do is verify your injection pump timing. I bet its off. How did you determine your baseline timing and how, from there did you determine how much to advance it??

PS Don't give up on that Cruiser. Once all the bugs are worked out you'll realize how great they are. You have had an unusual amount of bad luck indeed.

there is always beer and coffee, and for some reason my wife likes seeing the yard and driveway full of cruisers.

borrow a stethescope this morning and listened to the clatter. seems to come from all over. the most metallic clang emanates from the bellhousing, but everywhere else: IP, valve cover, block, oilpan, there is a ticking.

hmmm.

Cam, we initially put the pump back on in the exact same spot as before. When the engine wouldn't catch after bleeding the lines, Brian advance and retarded just a smidge to see where the engine would at least run, then run smoothly with a minimum of exhaust smoke.

real scientific like.

Rattle solved. Short story is the pump was not in correctly, and it was still sucking air.

Cam came round with a piezo timing light, but we couldn't use it as my lines are 3/16 not 1/4 inch, the size of the pickup. After hearing the engine and trying to bleed the lines, Cam decided it was still sucking air in. When we pulled the pump, the woodruff key was mangled. Turned out I'd not seated it correctly when reinstalling the pump.

Down to Proctor and Wilson, two new seals and a woodruff key later, the engine purred to life again, very nice.

Bit of an embarrasment for me, really, as I have good manuals, so really the bulk of the problems were my own fault. not measuring twice, so to speak.

Hey, your learning. s*** happens.

These engines need to be timed with the Toyota tool if you have upset it. The ACSD must be disabled as well. Once you have the timing base-lined, then you can use a timing light to re-set the timing.

Valves that are out of adjustment will make a hell of a rattle once the engine warms up and it's under a load. The valve must be adjusted COLD - like 12 hours of resting cold. If you even run the even for a matter of seconds, you have to wait several hours for it to cool down and normalize.

John,

Noted, thanks. A valve clearance check and adjust are in the plans, along with the pump timing adjustment, properly.

Since we reinstalled the pump, things are much, much smoother.
