Thought I would add to this thread. I too was having trouble with the camshaft sensor code. Shielded wires, tested good with multimeter. All signals from camshaft sensor working properly distributor tested good. Problem ended up being Timing Chain Tensioner, fixed by giving it a little tap, tap, tap with the top of my cane and code went away. Hope this helps anyone with this problem.
it’s been a long process, due to disability and figuring out what the problem was. The valve cover gasket was leaking, the half moons were leaking, vacuum lines not being the correct size, throttle cable, and trans cable not being adjusted correctly. The codes P0340 and P0325 didn’t pop up until it was well into diagnosis. The first code to pop up was the P0325 months before the P0340 illuminated.Once the code for the camshaft sensorpopped up I followed the FSM and went through this platform trying to get help with diagnosis. Once the FSM brought me to ECU, I went to the next step on the code list for possible causes. When I got to timing, verified that my timing was correct Set at 3° and RPMs at 650. Which led me into mechanical timing, which led me to the easiest thing to look at first, the timing chain tensioner. At startup is when it was most noticeable and foul smell from the exhaust. It would start up and then quickly fall RPMs to about 600 then in drive at stoplight the RPMs would fall to 450. The engine felt like it had a misfire at 55 mph. It would start to run rough. The tensioner was not tightened down correctly and slowly backed out enough to throw a code. so the fix was tightening the tensioner according to the FSM.I have attached a video of the sound it was making at startup.
