Update

The BLM sent down a gal on a special 120 day assignment to "coordinate implimentation" of the DRECP. That was approximately 60 days ago. I don't think when they sent her that they considered the timeframe for dealing with the new comments from the new comment period. Again, I think they thought of it as just a formality.

She attempted to reach out to the Desert Advisory Council once she got here. A few of my collegues met with her. I did not, nor did I hear anything back from them about the meeting.

So last Saturday we had our quarterly meeting of the Council, and she was on the agenda as a speaker, with an update on implimentation. I was prepared to hear an arrogant assertion about a 'done-deal. ' Boy was I wrong!

Her speech basically consisted of telling us she was available for discussions, and that there was no reasonably certain timetable for the signing of the document (original planned sign date was Christmas last year). She also said the Secretary hopes the document will be signed before she leaves office in January!

That tells me two things. One: me and the members of the public and NGOs who submitted challenges on this have made more of an impact than we realized for them to have scaled back their timetable so much. Two: I stand about a snowball's chance in hell of being reappointed to the Council when my term expires. If I've pissed off a 'Democrat'Secretary under a 'Democrat' president, the Republicans sure ain't gonna like me!
