Anyone in CA wanting to get chrome done, better do it before 1/1/2027. At that point many shops will cease to do Hexavalent (true Chrome 6, not the crappy Trivalent Chrome 3). This is due to strong CA EPA regulations passed in 2023 that will begin 1/1/2027.

California law, through the Air Resources Board (CARB), is phasing out hexavalent chromium (chrome-6) use in plating, banning new facilities (Jan 2024), requiring strict emission controls, and mandating phase-outs by 2027 for decorative and 2039 for functional plating to protect public health from its cancer risks, with interim deadlines and compliance measures like enclosures and training.
Key Regulations & Deadlines:
  • New Facilities: No new hexavalent chromium chrome plating facilities can be built after January 1, 2024.
  • Existing Facilities (General): Must implement strict housekeeping (by Jan 1, 2024) and best management practices (by July 1, 2024) to control emissions.
  • Decorative Plating:
    • Phase out by January 1, 2027, OR
    • Elect an alternative path by Jan 1, 2025, to use it until January 1, 2030, if they meet building enclosure requirements by Jan 1, 2026.
  • Functional Plating (e.g., Aviation):
    • Phase out by January 1, 2039, with technology reviews by CARB in 2032 and 2036 to assess alternatives.

Many shops will still be platting, but not the good Hexavalent stuff. Many shops are planning to ship items out of state/country, but at that point which type of chrome your getting is a crap shoot. Maybe the current administration will repeal this as it effects multiple industries, not just rebuilders.

Mixed feelings on this. I hate that California is forcing out small businesses.

But, they are nasty places! I toured a chrome shop in Oakland when I was in Hazmat school. I couldn’t wait to get out of there! Boiling vats of chemicals and heavy metals. I felt bad for the guys working there.

I feel so much better about the poop in the street, now.
So tired of this stupid trope.

Don't believe the BS, and don't repeat it.
California is great
Every big city has problems, and we have several of the biggest cities in the country, and they have problems, to be expected.
Certain media outlets have made it a full time job to bash California and frame what it is and what it represents to their viewers. Have you been there recently to see if it's true?

Want to talk about Boise's homeless problems or Pocatello, twin falls, etc?
Not all Idaho is the sawtooths and beautiful mountains and rivers and not all California is the worst parts of SF or LA.

Don't be a parrot of propaganda

You're not making a good case for California. 🤣

There's plenty of other places in the country to ship parts to for plating or anodizing. One of the few good things about modern times, information is really available to sift through the garbage companies and the good ones.
