Buy the 1999 or the 2000?

I think the price it slightly high especially in this crappy used car market for a v8 suv. Just my .02 on the price. I paid 22,500 for my 00 with 80k on it in Jan 05. I just saw a similar one go for 20,500 last week. See what you can negotiate;) Of course, it may be worth paying the extra for a rust free vehicle if there are not a bunch on the market where you live.

As far as 99 vs. 00 goes, the 00 seems like a better idea for Utah due to the additional traction features. If you plan on doing harder wheeling you can add the ARB locker to the rear later on.

This is assuming they are in similar mechanical condition.

Yes, just moved form SW Missouri to SW Utah. I now have a 2004 4runner (I'm keeping it) and will be getting a 100 Series LC. Owned a FZJ80 for 7 years and once you own a LC you always want another (wish I would of kept it). Wife has a 2003 350Z and I don't think it will workout long term in this area. My 86 year old mom lives with us and I need to haul her wheelchair around (won't fit in the Z) The wife needs the 4runner to get to work rough gravel road, (not what you want to drive a Z on) so I will either buy one of these mentioned vehicles if they checkout or I will wait and trade the Z and get a 2004/2005 LC. I don't really need 3 vehicles but I need 2 SUV's. I would of kept the PitBull handle but I'm on a new internet service and not the best "techee". If the Mod's want to give me back my post count that would be great :) FirstToy you still have your 4runner? Still like it? Mine has been flawless.

I think you are right, if the 99 checks out I will offer $21K since it only has 58K miles. 99's have to burn 91 octane so that is a negative.

John, the A750F is the 5sp tranny but yes, the A343 was carried over from the FZJ80's. I vaguely remember reading about the tranny problem from a different source but here is a thread in which it is mentioned. Perhaps one of these guys know more about it.

:D :D :D
Figures....I NEVER use 1FZ...and 2UJ.....all that motor and transfer case, tranny number stuff. I can't remember it! :D :D

The one time I get bold and use a number I BLOW IT!

Wait a minute. Pitbull. No, Pitbull was always cool about the 100. I mixed him up as there were so many 100-haters. :)

You got that right!!! :) Ever since I bought the 4runner I've had the same feeling someone might have that bought a fake rolex watch. Its a good knock off but it ain't a LC.

I also own both a 4-Runner (3rd gen) and a LC. I agree with you guys, the 4-Runner has been awesome... but's its still not a Cruiser, and never will be. I do like the size of the Runner on the trails... most of the trails in this area are real tight.

Regarding the question of the 99 or 00. Looks like I got overruled by most of the responses. Take their advice, they know a hell of a lot more about it than I do.

Speaking of the LC 5speed auto tranny. Does anyone know if the 5th gear is any higher than the 4speed auto tranny (ie: the 4speed in my '99)? Or did they just fill in the gaps between 1st and 4th ratios?

About the same cuz they went from 4.3 to 4.1 in the 5-spd

Spresso, your question intrigued me so I went ahead and did the math. In turns out that 1st gear of the 5-speed is lower and the top gear is higher. Reverse is lower as well.

A343F "4-sp Auto" (Effective Ratio=Gear X Diff gear)
- 1st Gear 2.95 (12.68)
- 2nd Gear 1.53 (6.57)
- 3rd Gear 1.00 (4.3)
- 4th Gear 0.765 (3.26)
- Reverse 2.678 (11.48)
Diff Ratio 4.3

A750F "5-sp Auto" (Effective Ratio)
- 1st Gear 3.520 (14.43)
- 2nd Gear 2.042 (8.372)
- 3rd Gear 1.40 (5.74)
- 4th Gear 1.00 (4.1)
- 5th Gear 0.716 (2.936)
- Reverse Gear 3.244 (13.3)
Diff Ratio 4.1

I have the A343F. What's interesting is if I install 4.88's, my effective 1st gear will be 14.39 versus the A750F/4.1 combination of 14.43

Thanks for the suggestions. I bought the 1999 with rear air and lockers. It only has 58K miles (Silver Paint) and it spent its whole life in AZ as a Mall Queen based on the body and undercarriage. No rust, and a perfect Carfax report. I will pick it up Saturday, Wife and I need to go to St. George Utah shopping Saturday so now I will have 2 SUV's to fill up with stuff when we drive back home. I've test driven a lot of LC's and this one drove better than any. Including a 2003 and a new 2005.

Hoser...thanks for taking the time to run the #'s and summarize!...you should probably put this in the 100 Tech section...I think it is valuable for most.

Congrats

Congrats on the new Cruiser, I have the same year, also in Silver. Just wish mine had 58K miles.

Best of luck!

interesting that the 5sp has a notable advantage in gear ratios, both ways.
Yea!

Congrats SWUtah...I love my '99...you will too. Now let's get wheel'n!

Just curious what you had to give for that 99. I have a 99 Im trying to sell with 65k miles.
