OK, so I busted, no sheared all hub studs and dowels on my rear FF axle on the rubicn this week. oh, and not onece, but twice.... second time I was above cadillac and just yanked the axle and drove with 3 wheel drive. Thanks ARB... anyhoo. so, anyone have a SOLID fix for this? ...and not meaning to go D60 or 14 bolt....yet.... I must say I am very disapointed to haVe sheared my studs, both ARP and stock toyota. I was driving smoothly, not doing anything stupid. and as I chatted with others at Rubithon with F/F's I have come to find out that this is very common.

I know Longfield's has an upgrade to add 4 dowels. anyone else out there have any issues and a solid fix? all experienced input appreciated.

Current set up:

Rear FF from non usa FJ60
Polly Pro chromolly axles
ARP hub studs.

Seems like I read somewhere that the stock axle will allow some twist under load. Aftermarket high alloy axles will not twist as much and puts all the stress on the studs and dowels, you have in effect found the next weakest link in the rearend.

...yes I realize that, and that is why I am looking for what folks have done to fix it.

Sorry to hear about this Chris. good seeing you at Rubithon and glad you guys got out OK. We winched a couple of times coming out, but not too bad overall. Thanks for the help/spot in Big Sluice-much appreciated.

Very bad luck on the studs the second time. This is such a common problem at on the Rubicon there must be something specific about that trail. When you pulled the axle, how did you keep water out of the axle?

If you get the 7/16 cap screw mod to work, post up and I may follow that lead in the front. I'm going 14 bolt in the rear before next Rubithon.

I just put the polys in my FF rear and the studs were the next thing I was worried about. This is next on my upgrade list if I don't go to a 14b instead.

Not exactly the same - but I used to shear dowels regularly with the Aisin hubs. Added four larger dowels, kept the stock two - run 30 spline longs with the chromo Aisin drive gears, and nary any problems using "stock" studs and cone washers.

I think that 4 larger extra dowels - or even 6 large dowels would be the smartest upgrade. The larger bolts can't hurt.

Curious that the Poly's have less twist - I tended to think the opposite, having shattered one and bent another (both FJ40 SF long side). In both cases the splines had about 10 - 15 degrees of permanent twist (whereas stock would simply shear off before twisting), and the middles were obviously twisting - as under heavy load they'd bend or shatter at the mid section. Thinking they're a more pliable/stronger metal - with less material than the stiff stock axles. Honestly don't know - but that was the impression I got. Gave up on them - went 14 bolt.

yes pollys twist. I was there and when it let go it was the loudest snapping sound i ever heard. I hope i don't trash mine.

Does PP allow you to modify your shafts, as in drilling out for 7/16's bolts, and retain the warranty? I wouldn't assume so.

drilled tapped both hubs to 7/16 , and a spare too. will have it done tomorrow. I will post up some pics. I am guessing this will be a significant upgrade. thanks for the suggestions.

yep, we had fun getting out! lots of huge holes over the snow drifts. I just yanked the axle and covered it with a sandwich bag and zip tie to keep the water out. I think I will prolly do the same mod in the front when I am done with the rear.

x2 .. and was the nuts/bolts torque to specs ..? if there is any play there you will got busted studs inmediately ..

Chris...would you mind posting some pics of the finished product?
That is a SUCK time to have that happen.

you bet! it is done and it is bad ass! :deadhorse: if this breaks....something is really wrong. I'll post up pics and a write-up. this could also be done for the front hubs if they start blowing up... we'll see.
