Boat trader will only have expensive boats usually. ebay is worthless. Local paper is usually your best bet, or just drive around in the redneck neighborhoods and look for one in a yard with a for sale sign on it. Or try a neighboring city's newspaper. If you have a local all-classified paper that's a good bet too - we have one here called the Action Shopper. In your local paper make sure you check the "cheap" section, usually at the beginning of the classifieds, where the ads are cheap and the prices are limited to something like $250...I've bought and sold lots of stuff in that part of our local classifieds...
Also check the bulletin boards at the local grocery stores. Usually there are boats there...
you can find used jon boats for cheap. They will be without motor but cheap. You can really find cheap ones if they have holes. If you get an aluminum one with a hole you can repair it. not sure about wood or fiberglass with holes.
I would say buy one and forget about building it.

A friend of mine who lived in Paradise Cove kept seeing this nice aluminum garvey boat in a yard in Malibu. The thing sat there for a year, upside down in the dirt, and he kept eyeing it. He figured since it didn't have a For Sale sign on it, it wasn't for sale. Finally, he drove by, knocked on the door, and the old lady who answered said "That ******* thing! My son-in-law brought that ******* thing here two years ago and he hasn't done a ******* thing with the ******* thing. Hell, I'll give you twenty bucks to take the ******* thing away!" Threw a $250 dollar used 15 hp Merc on the back, and he had himself a Ranch Boat.
So I second the "Cruise the neighborhood and look for boats" proposal. You never know what you can find.

found a really nice 14' Orlando Clipper aluminum boat in a field with a trailer. Wasn't for sale but upon knocking on the door, the owner said $500 and it's yours. Negotiatiated the price down to $450 and went home happy with a great boat/trailer. Put a 15 HP Johnson on it and it is a great shallow water boat. A real screamer.
I've had it now for about 5 years, and 2 people have sinced knocked on my door and offered to buy it.

well, thanks for the advice, but luckly i diddent listen to ANY of it. 
(well most of it).
Me and a buddy went through dumpsters at construction sights after asking permission, and got wood. the workers mostly laughed at us, and bet that we couldent do it. so far it hassent cost a penny, and we have a good bit of the frame built. we have spent 2 hours working, and that includs plannning how to do it also. i will post pictures tomarrow, and also keep updateing this thread with progress.

you'll see, wait till you start buying fiberglass and resins, and mixing cups, and brushes, and more epoxy, and fiberglass, and sandpaper, and more sandpaper, and more fiberglass, then more epoxy, and sandpaper.......
aren't you in Columbia? go over to pine crest marine (that's were I got my boat)across the street from them is a boat junk yard. they would probably give you one of the boats.

err...okay. I look forward to seeing pictures, and would be curious as to what wood you're using.

haha, i go to school in columbia, but i live in greenville. I am useing wood that was found in dumpsters (pressure treated "deck wood") i fuggure that at the very least this will give me somthing to do for a few weeks. i will probally not use fiberglass, it will be all wood. pictures in an hour or so

dang, i see ya'll have a lot of confidance in me, i'm workin on pictures, i cant get them to load on to the pc. i broke down and went to home depo and spent 6.50 on a box of screws. we finished the frame, and are going to hang the plywood tomarrow for the skin. i know puting glass on it would be best, but do you think line-x would work? might be cheaper (remember the point of this is to make aboat as cheap as i can)

I would still get a small roll of fiberglass tape and enough resin to seal all seams, then maybe line-x it. It may work fine at first byt you really don't want to find the issues out on the middle of the lake.
