I am prepping for a long road trip, and one stop I am making is to BudBuilt to have sliders and skids installed next Friday. I'm leaving this Sunday (2 days), so I'm packing the truck today and tomorrow. I forgot to ask Bud about the old skids when I talked to him last week confirming my arrival date, and they seem to be closed this week for the holidays, so I'm wondering if anybody here that has his setup can answer this question. Maybe @Taco2Cruiser will see this post.

I don't want to throw away the original factory skids/covers after they install the new ones, but I also don't want a bunch of big dirty greasy metal parts in my truck for the rest of my long trip, so I'm trying to figure out what to take off now before I leave. I already have the big plastic piece off that goes below the oil pan, and the 2 metal ones in front of that.

But what about the plastic pieces on either side, in front of the tires? Do they get put back on? I have them off now.

And what about the brace that is right in the center of the front, for the old metal pieces? Does that need to come off as well?

Thanks!

What stage BB skids did you go with? When I ordered, I seem to recall that determined what was covered/replaced. It might be easiest to just remove all of the underbelly skids and the sliders and just reinstall anything that doesn't get covered once you are back from your trip.

Here's a write up I did of my install. Includes all the pictures of what you need to take off.

Those 2 plastic pieces on either side up front can go back on, or you can leave them off.

Oh yeah I can see how that might matter. I went with Stage 1, just front (1/4" aluminum) and engine (3/16" SS).

Rob recently updated the website with some more comprehensive pictures on the stage 3 description, check these out as it might answer some of your questions:

He'll likely see this and respond though.

OK, that is helpful, looks like the plastic "wings" by the tow hooks in the front go back on. But I'm not 100% clear on the center brace, is it still used? I'd hate to take it off, then get there and need it.

If you are rolling through Greensboro NC and need a beer, give a holler, it's on me. I came really close to buying your truck when it was at that BMW dealer!

Very cool! I actually did talk to the Mudder that bought it. PM incoming, I'll take some advice on the best route to take, I'm coming from northern Maryland.

Sorry man, like normal, I get pulled every which way at the shop.

Between the shop roof getting ready for replacement, the Black Friday orders getting done (for the 67 of you that ordered sliders in November, we’re on the last 25 of them), and the three big R&D projects, I’m having trouble getting back up to the office. Oh and we had more people walk into the shop this week than normal. Which is cool, but I just need to start planning for that more.

So... take off the factory engine skid (all three pieces) and the two metal guard/skid things that cover the front differential frame mounts. Bring the plastic tow hook surrounds as those integrate into the BB skids.

Rob, no need to apologize at all. I just wish I had thought to ask Bud when I was talking to him last week. Good to hear you guys are busy, but I feel bad that you are working this week.

OK, I'll drop that center brace too. Didn't think about those little guard things, I'll look at those too. I'll probably toss the plastics ones in a bag, they don't have much to connect to without the factory skids there.

See you next Friday morning. I asked Bud about also having the front shock spacers installed, but it will be dependent on time and getting the truck right in for an alignment. I need to get to Savannah GA by Friday night, that's more important.

THANKS!!

Are you guys working on slides for lx? thanks.

Why do you want to keep the factory skids? One piece is plastic and the other two for the front are super thin metal. I had intent to keep or give them away, but there was no one wanted them and they were so flimsy they went in the trash.

I just like keeping my options. Yeah the plastic center one is pretty dumb, but I'm gonna hang on to it for now.
