Make it a good one D.

After thinking about what kind of vehicle to buy for my daughter, I have pretty much decided that I am going to get her an 80 series. I've found a good deal on a very clean white 1994 FZJ80. It's got an ARB and warn winch on the front with everything else pretty much stock. It has no lockers. The ask on it is $4,995. That seems like a good price to me. I'm looking for comments about high mileage on Land Cruisers. I've never really been overly concerned about high miles on a Toyota, much less a Land Cruiser. However, this vehicle has 256,000 miles on it and I've never considered a vehicle with mileage that high. What do you guys think? Any comments or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your opinions/help.

Hey, Check out the Quick Quarter.

They have a 1991 land Cruiser for like 6000. Don't know what shape it's in, but seems pretty good.

Thanks
Cody

my opinion hash`t changed

all new driver MUST drive a standard! keeps there mind on the road not the radio friends or the phone.

80`s are BIG bulky top heavy brakes are adequate as long as you keep factory size tires the one big plus is there not rocket ships:)
and the do like to be well feed thirsty buggers:D

milage isn`t a concern as long as the maintenance has been kept up

:idea:wench can be used to hitch it to a tree or light pole at the mall beat the hell out of an alarm no body pay any attention to them going off any how:lol:

Get her a nice 4Runner/ Tacoma with a V-6 E-locker combo that you can borrow for trail use. Does it have to have a expensive LandCruiser tag.

It doesn't have to be a Land Cruiser. I guess my reasoning remains as it was when I first asked for opinions. I can set it up as a mild "expedition type" build and use it some myself. I suppose I could do the same with a 4Runner or Tacoma. The thing is, she wants a tank. Her first choice is to take over my F-250. She's got it in her mind that she wants to lift it and put 35's on it. That's out of the question. No way, I'm putting her in a vehicle with more than a $10,000 value. After that, her choice would be to drive my 40 or to get another for herself. I really don't see that as a practical or safe option. This being my daughter, obviously safety is my primary concern. Paul, you seem to think that an 80 isn't exactly a safe option because it's top heavy and doesn't handle well? I see it as slow and built like a tank. So, she won't be able to drive like a mad woman. With the ARB in the front and a driver's airbag, I'm not all that concerned if she were to get in a collision. Also, with the budget I 've got for this, I need to get something reliable. I am confident in what can be had in the Land Cruiser market for under $10,000 (that probably applies to the 4Runner or Tacoma as well). The thing about the 4Runner/Tacoma is that they are very common. My daughter, being a girl wants to make a statement with what she drives. I know that really shouldn't weigh into my decision making but I've got to balance what I want in a vehicle for her and what she wants to drive. She seems to think she's a country girl and wants a big 4wd. I've talked with her about 4Runners and she did not bite. It's obvious to me she wants to drive something with a wow factor. Since there are no mildly built "expedition type" Land Cruisers around, I thought they would be a great compromise vehcle. I showed her a few pics of what I had in mind and she thought they were cool. Anyway, I understand what you guys are saying and appreciate it. If it were solely up to me, I'd probably go that route. In fact, when she leaves for college, she'll probably have to drive something more sensible. For now, only having to drive just a couple of miles to and from school each day, I'm somewhat willing to appease her desire for a certain type of vehicle.

Sounds like a nice one Armond and I wouldn't be concerned too much with the mileage if it looks like its been cared for. I've read about many going 300,000 + without any issues. As long as you keep up with the maintenance it should certainly be a reliable and solid first vehicle for her. Teach her how to check the oil they all burn a little. I'm a big fan of the 80 the boy and I spend a bunch of time in ours and the versatility and reliability is what you expect it to be. The downside its a gas hog but then I didn't buy it for the gas mileage :D On a side note if you wanted to shoot a note to Chris Tolleson he and Debbie bought their daughter a white 80 for her first vehicle and he can share his thoughts from one parent and cruiser fan to another. The girls (wife and daughter) have 80's and he has a 40  thats a good looking garage ;)

Thanks Larry. I'll try to reach out to Chris to get his thoughts. As for checking the oil, that's a great idea. I'm always striving to make her as independent as possible and teaching her a little about how the vehicle operates mechanically would be a good start!

Add some pink decals and this has country girl head turner all over it:
Pickup Truck • Tacoma - Louisiana Sportsman Classifieds, LA
Good luck with the search.

Wow! A 9" lift? I'm sure she'd love it. However, I suspect I'd be getting calls from our tenants about her riding through the crawfish ponds. Like I said, I've got to strike a good balance between what she wants and waht I'm silling to let her drive. Thanks for the lead though.

That seems pretty expensive for a truck with that many miles, my 2 cents.

Agreed.

First thoughts... 80's don't tolerate "the swerve" and yanking on the steering wheel too much. Top heavy beasts. I love mine. I'd put her in the F250....not too much on the road that she would lose to in a one-on-one.

let us know!

Good luck

Thanks for that bit of info. Maybe I'm looking in all the wrong places because that's pretty low for what I've been seeing out there......especially when you factor in the ARB and winch. I think I'm running all the right traps. I'm looking on mud, craigslist, ebay, autotrader, cruizers.com, LA Sportsman, and anything else I can find. I visit each of those sites at least twice a day. Of course, she's picky about color so I am limited to considering only White, Gray and Sage. I'm looking for years between 1993-2000. What am I missing?
