Jon, what's your military address? I'm gonna call my Uncle Paul McIlhenny and ask him to send you a bunch of Tabasco products. His company has a history of treating our military personnel with respect and generosity.
Ask him if we can go shoot a deer while you have him on the phone or do a Sunday cruise around the Island one day. I used to do alot work out there at the Marsh House and such, we would see all kinds of wild life driving to different locations. I rember Tony Simmons had his Rolls Royce club out riding on gravel roads in there million dollar cars serveral years back not what I would do with my 1936 RR.
I'm pretty sure I can arrange a ride out there - no wheeling of course. That would be fun. In fact, my first Land Cruiser was one I purchased from my uncle. He used it on the Island.
As for shooting the deer, that aint gonna happen. Though, when I was about 9 years old, I used to shoot armadillos and squirrels on the island. I'd eat the squirrels and get paid 50 cents for every armadillo tail I'd bring to the factory on Saturday mornings. I've still got most of those 50 cent pieces. I'd also get to drink Coffee Milk (Cafe au lait) and thouht I was big stuff. Remind me to tell you my favorite story about shooting/pot-lighting armadillos on the island. You'll get a kick out of it.
Spending time out there as a kid was great. Avery Island is a paradise and it seemed like it was all mine when I was growing up.
I'm sure it was a blast jumping into the blue hole after running around all morning with the rest of the kids. Now the kids ride 4 wheelers all over and get food from the deli during summer visits. We had a black bear jump out of a dumpster one day behind the pepper feilds and I rember Mr. Ned saying he found one in his pool long ago.
Its nice just riding through Jungle Gardens if the mosqiutos are not out and a short drive for most of us club members.
Swimming in the blue hole was awesome as was fishing in the company pond & Ned's pond. We'd play tennis at Marsh House, hide & seek around Cherokee & Mr. Walter's. Jungle Gardens was our own playground. The Saline Swamp was creepy and cool all at the same time. When the train came by my Uncle's house going to and from the Salt mine, the engineer would throw candy to us. Then, when the boxcars were stopped, there would always be some spillage of rock salt which we would scoop up for our own use. As for what you call the deli, we called it the commissary. In fact, I still do. We had a key to it and would go down to make our own sandwiches and/or pick up supplies if they weren't open. But, we could never make our sandwiches as good as Ms. Eula Mae. If we want to take a fall Cajun Country tour when it cools down some, we could incorporate a ride out to Avery Island and see every square inch of it.....the places most of the public never get to see.
wow!! that would be awesome, I've always wanted to do that.
p.s. Paul your signature is hard to read in that color!!
I have always wanted to go there also.
I have told Paul to change the color b/c of that.

I think of Huck Finn sitting on the river bank chewing on a piece of straw telling this story as I read it. You could make a novel out of this.....and I would definitely make the drive over for the opportunity to ride Avery Island.![]()
