Curious if any mudders have have used one of these before.

I am hoping to be able to run our Engel MT45 with it for 3-4 days while camping in Anza Borrego or camping down in Baja.

My plan was to bring an Optima and keep it topped off with the Brunton but apparentley the panel could also run the Engel directly as long as there was good sun exposure.

Thanks,
Bob

when it comes down to it i would want a battery no matter what, when your out in the boonies and your relying on your fridge for food and that food needs to be cold to keep i wouldnt want to hope that i had perfect sun conditions ect..
run it with a battery and youll be good to go
just my 2 cents

What is cool about this product is that it comes with connectors to connect to the battery, and also a connector that will connect directly to a 12-volt device.

Plan is to use it to keep the battery charged and then run the Engel off of that.

I have had this panel for over a year on several camping trips. Environmental conditions determine how much draw you are putting on your battery. This summer I tested this panel with my Engel 45 out of my cruiser attached to a 1700 odessey battery. Basically the battery would run the fridge about 2 days without the panel and about 3 days with it. At the 45 run with freezing and near temps at night It went four days no problem. Be sure to have the panel follow the path of the sun thoughout the day.

You will need to calulate the amperage draw of the fridge and the anount of amps the pamel puts out. keep in mind that even though the panel might be in sun all day it might only be effective for a couple of hours.

I had a project for work and a solar panel to supply 2 amp hours would require a panel 4FT X 8FT plus an array of batteries to supply the power when there was no sun. Here is El Paso (The Sun City) the calulations were to depend on two hours of sun a day to supply the panel.

There are all sort of calulators on the web. Once you run the number you will see why solar is not a good option for power.

The panel you have is more for suppying milliamps like to a Ipod ,laptop, camera etc. I hope this helps.

Great product

a single panel should be capable of producing 1.5-2 amps @ 13-17v in full sun... By linking 2 together I was very suprised at what I could actually "run" or charge with a couple of these panels. In fact, I bet 2 linked panels would be able to run an Engel and lightly charge a battery at the same time. One however, is more than enough to run many of the most common electronics ( GPS , cell phone, nicad chargers etc..)

Although a bit pricey.. IMO its hard to find anything even close to the Solaris 26 when it comes to size, weight, construction and performance.

I wish I had a few more !!

Cost: MSRP $1298 (Brunton 52) + $40 (controller) + shipping

All this to simply run a Engel 45? This seems a bit on the "extreme spending" side but that's just me.

Here's what I recommend:

Buy one of Odyssey Group 31 or save money and buy the Diehard P4 Platinum battery from sears for about $210 discussed in this thread.

A group 31 battery should be able to run the Fridge w/o recharging for 3 or 4 days I suspect, AND this can be your ONLY battery for the vehicle! You can bring along a simple jump start booster as a precaution in case the main battery simply goes too low for starting duties. This booster can be used in other cars when you return home. Having a second battery that's not installed doesn't make sense to me if you camp out frequently.

Just my .02 cents.

Thanks I just found the Brunton 52 for $600 which is the cheapest I have seen it.
The Brunton 26 is below $300 from a few online retailers.

I recently took the Brunton 26 up to the Central Coast and I was able to run the Engel fridge for 4-5 hours a day plugged directly into the panel.

You do have to adjust the panel to get the right angle with the sun.

Pretty cool stuff. :-)

sweet, glad it worked out for ya!
