I was removing my factory running boards to paint, and I managed to break a stud. I’m trying to restore the car to factory spec. Any tips on what to do next? I’m at a loss of what to do. The stud seems welded to the body. There isn’t access to it. I have the broken bit, but I’m assuming I can’t just weld it back. I hate things like this…

OK, for the sake of completeness, use a dremel, and a carbide burr. You want a burr 1/2 the diameter of the stud. It'll take about 5 minutes to remove.

FWIW, I have the flex shaft extension for mine and it's worth three times what it costs. You don't need an authentic dremel; mine's a Craftsman.

You'll need an 8–mm stud, about 25–mm long. There is no Toyota replacement part number for it, because the inner rocker panel is furnished with the studs in place.

If you want, you can use the same screw that Toyota used, 91651-40816, but you'll have to remove the body mount bushings in order to install them. The bushings are in the way and that's why Toyota used a stud and nut in these two places. There's no magic to the selection of fasteners; Toyota did what they did because it suited the assembly process. You do not have that limitation.

So if I use an easy out, I can just use a screw in this studs place? I couldn’t get any movement on it, so I assumed it’s welded in! This is the stud the us factory running boards use to mount the middle bracket.

Yes, but read my caveat above.

I tried simply unscrewing it as I have enough of a stud to grab it with pliers. I can’t get it to move. Ca anyone else confirm they were able to unscrew this stud? Wondering if some years had welded studs or something.

I got one person saying welded and another screwed in. Any tie breakers? If it is welded any advice on repairing it?

Think whatever you want. Good luck unscrewing it!

Cheers

Can you drill it out, replace with another welded stud or weld nut, or tap and use a bolt, or ???

I don’t believe so because it doesn’t appear to have access to the backside. This is essentially behind the bottom of the door sill.

You can totally drill it out and use a nutsert.

You can clearly see how Toyota welded it, it’s a small plate with a stud, the spot weld next to his broken stud is how it is welded to the backside of the panel.

What do I know though, I just build Land Cruisers for a living.

Cheers
