I have decided to do a complete brake line replacement on my 67 FJ40. No issues with current original lines, but they are old. For this upgrade, I am farming out the job to a trusted shop who works on FJ40 and has done other work for me. I was starting to write up the job request and have this so far:
  • NiCopp brake lines
  • New Rubber brake hoses
  • Remove brake line distribution block (don't believe this is needed any longer)
  • Full brake flush and blead
  • Adjust proporting valve as necessary
During the perlinary call with the shop, they asked if there are any brake kit available. From my past research, I didn't believe there were any quality kits available and my custom setup might rule them out anyway. However, I did see an ad for Classic Tub and was wondering what there quality was and if I purchased a kit for a later FJ40 could that be used with adjustments.

Any suggests on the job scope or trying to utilize a kit (save money option - maybe ) or do I just go with a custom NiCopp setup (my current choice).

I did the same on my ‘67. I kept the original ball & claw up front, so against my desires, I had to go with a bracket option for front and rear.

It can be done more cost effectively than I did it, but I went with the manafre front and rear disc kit. They don’t match, but the brackets were good and wilwood calipers have never let me down. And neither have their master cylinders (except this one really was defective, but wilwood swapped it out for me).

~35’ or so of NiCopp, a bunch of 10mm nuts, a few 3 way tee’s (3 I think) and the kits came with braided stainless. It might look out of place, but doesn’t bother me.

Manafre has a firewall adapter for the master so you don’t have to mess with the rib.
I followed the original routing, with the exception of the rear line going along the firewall as seen in the first picture.

They are still manual, but the pedal feels good and it stops great.

Thanks for all the informtion and the pictures -- very helpful. Will be dropping the truck off at the shop this weekend - this will be my "one-major" project for the year or so I tell myself :)
