Hey guys, I'm new to the FJ family, been mostly into 4 Runners and Pick Ups, early to late 1980's. I purchased a 1964 FJ and I'm wanting to do a few upgrades, first is front brake conversion to disc. I've read a few places you need to replace the front axle or its easier to do it with a newer axle. I know wheel clearance is a thing, but if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be appreciated. Thanks.

You should do some searching and reading in the forum. Not sure there is much for a 64 disk brake conversion but I'd bet someone has done it. Drive line flange might come up beside the need for a proportion valve, master cylinder, hose fittings, back spacing...

post some pic's

Look at the vendors and the classified for parts.

Started with a single circuit master cylinder, wrong size brake line and fittings. Now brake routing different. Now your to the axles. 64 does not have birfield but a ball and claw in the knuckles. Inner axle has a bushing not a seal. A lot of people will convert their front axle using later Land Cruiser or mini truck knuckles. With an early ball and claw axle your looking at an adapter kit. Would be easier using a 40 series axle that already has disc brakes. Would do your homework before doing anything. Plan the whole conversation before buying anything.

Ok great, thank you for the manual. I will do some more searching around!

Yes research, there is tons of info on here. Typically, with that age (I’ve had two) you change the front axle to a a 1974 or new FJ40 axle with factory front disk brakes. And as Living in the Past says/ infers it is the right time to address a dual circuit master cylinder. For this research (a lot on mud, and with venders to confirm what’s available), is key and near infinite as so many people do it different. GM, 80 series, Wildwood, and vacuum assisted or not.. the good news is they all seem to work with similar satisfaction. You don’t have to do them at the same time but it makes the most sense with an early model.

Welcome. Post up some pictures when you get a chance and start a build thread!

Like others have said before me, the search tool is your friend. I prefer searching via google and adding ih8mud to the listing. Easier to find threads that way.

Feel Free to send me a PM with any questions. I converted my 1965 FJ40 to a vacuum assisted power, dual reservoir master cylinder brake system with 4 wheel disc brakes. I also changed out all the hard to find 9mm fittings to the standard 10mm and ran new hard and soft brake lines.

also, If you have the original riveted wheels, you will need to swap those for welded or a different style. The disc brakes will not work with those.

Read here on the axle upgrade:

Welcome here,
There is a wealth of knowledge, I have some of that knowledge. I'll keep an eye on your post.
I just completed doing power steering, hydroboost brakes and dual master cylinder on my 66 fj40.
I haven't decided the disk brake swap yet, but it would be neat.
