Bought a FJZ80 in the midst of a 1HZ swap, some questions

I think you need a different linkage on the side of the pump, probably like the one in the top pic. As Tapage says ,the one with the red tip goes to the transmission.

After a considerable amount of thought and some discussions with some well known 1HZ/1HD-T swap authorities on MUD, I made the decision yesterday that I was going to haul this thing up to Torfab in Washington to finish it up. I really respect the shop that it was at and the guys there are great, but in this case, I think having someone who knows the swap already is a good choice. I don't trust myself to do all the research correctly and in a timely manner to get on the road this summer. Besides, I've only heard great things about Tor so I'm excited to see the project move forward. Tomorrow's going to be a long day getting it up there with this slow ass trailer, but it feels awesome to have it finally parked outside the house!

Good call in the long run. Every tool has its use and every system is the way it is for a reason.

Good luck sir.

I was thinking that would be the best thing to do. They say the devil is in the detial and finishing conversions off is the hardest part.
I bet they were glad to see the back of it after 4 years LOL

your going to love that thing. i had the same engine put in my fj40 and went through the same BS. always go to a shop that has been there already. a 1 night stand with a nympho is way better than with a vergin.

There's part of me that says, "don't laugh." But, the part of me that agrees wins over. :) When I first started commercial fishing, my captain turned to me and said, "You need to get yourself a knife. A fisherman without a knife is like a whore without a c**t." So I went and got myself a knife.

I suppose this is a similar situation, though I hesitate to draw any direct comparison for the sake of those currently or previously working on the car. I will definitely say that I was impressed by Tor's knowledge and am excited to work with him as it's obvious he's done this dance before. Funny as this is to me, we spent a while looking over his own 1hd-t conversion and I had him start it up so I could hear a similar sounding engine as I've never heard it first hand. I tell ya, it's hot. I love it. Can't wait!

On Monday I flew back from Alaska down to Seattle and made my way via 3 different city buses with luggage and cooler in tow all the way up to Mukilteo, WA where Torfab is to pick up the "new" 80. Let me tell you, Tor did an amazing job! For not starting with a half-cut and having to source and/or make several parts, it looks pretty damn clean and factory. It certainly cost more than doing it myself, but the reality is that the detailed knowledge of wiring that Tor has and some of the thinking outside the box he had to do to configure a few items with the parts we were matching up, I couldn't have actually done it myself anyway. We drove down to Portland that evening and it was smooth as butter (and slow as molasses, but hey, its a 1HZ).

It was also loud as hell and left us a little exhausted after driving a couple of hours with some significant rice-rocket drone, but I'm hoping to fix that tomorrow by adding a 2nd muffler and probably the resonator that Tor threw in the back. I guess these engines are supposed to have multiple in-line mufflers, which is news to me. My only fear is that the 2nd muffler will really just be working against the 3" exhaust and Magnaflow that's already installed... We'll see soon enough.

There are a few items left to do that didn't quite make it in time as we're leaving on a several months long trip in 2 weeks. None are a big deal, but all are a necessity if we're living out of the thing!
- AC needs a couple of lines that are being fabbed and should arrive shortly.
- Stereo and speakers gotta go. I didn't notice the PO had the bass turned all the way down because half the speakers are blown... Will hopefully be dropping in a Kenwood DDX719 or a Clarion NX602.
- Slee headlight harness
- Currently the PIAA foglights don't work due to a faulty relay
- and a lot of general cleaning/painting/fixing of, well, everything. It sat for 4 years and was literally growing moss on some parts. The brakes also ended up rusting so badly that all 4 had to be almost completely replaced!

Unfortunately I've only got this one photo at the moment to post, but I'm happy to throw a few more up if people are interested in seeing some of the end result. That's all for now!
