Definitely looks like the protective plastic sheet was never removed, peel it off and you're good.

This is incorrect, it's the finish of the plastic surround delaminating. It will look much worse if you start picking at it.

I know, I am very surprised that they want to sell you a whole navi utit for $4k, lol. Found a seller on ebay who supposedly sells just a trim piece. Anyone ever bought one of off Ebay?

I looked into that, unfortunately their kit does not replace the head unit, it adds a module behind it.
