Hey
Just picked up a 1990 fj62. Runs strong, drives great. Has typical rust, and is sporting a palm size hole in the rear quarter panel, at the bottom corner by the wheel well.

2 part question, I have already searched the forum.....

1) Anyone have any experience passing MA inspection with some body rust? I've seen several registered FJs around in much worse shape....

2) Related, sort of, anyone have any mechanic recommendations around Boston??? That would be "friendly" to a 26 year old FJ? (I understand there is a cruiser specific mechanic database)

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

I know in Maine we have 'Antique' registration available, without inspection. The only thing you need to have 'Antique' vehicles is another 'NON-antique' vehicle registered and inspected in your name. To get around this, you can simply add your name to someone else's registration (brother, sister, sig. other, parents, friend, etc.) which can be done at the town office or BMV, will be less than $5 for a change fee, and won't affect the ownership of the other vehicle in anyway.

Best place to ask in in the clubhouse section - Yankee Toys.

I had a FJ60 registered in MA 10 years ago that had worse rust than that and passed inspection without issue; even had to pass emissions back then. I'd ask an inspection person to look at it. If it doesn't pass - zip screw a patch over top of it. To fix it right later will cover up any screw holes you make. Or fix it right by welding in a new piece of metal. Or cut it all off for some sliders.

In VA and VT it is simple.
Rust: they do not care as long as it is not being a safety violation (i.e. being unsafe) and exhaust gases cannot get into the vehicle.
So no holes in the floors, or on panels leading to the interior.

That rust you show is nothing.
