Went to Borregofest this past weekend with Gon2srf and Dan2722. Stayed away from the normally very windy Stagecoach campground in favor of Pinyon Mountain again this year. Great time - sorry NO PICS.

Went out Thursday to secure our favorite site - really didn't need to - there was nobody up there at all. Setting up my 10 year old Eureka tent, one of the poles had to have splintered right where the door is and it put enough pressure on the door zipper that it just separated the zipper later in the day. Worked to try to self-repair the zipper to no avail. In the market for a new tent...with only 2 weeks to go before SnT! Really torn between a reallly nice ground tent - Springbar 1st choice, REI Basecamp 6 2nd choice or spending $$$$$$ on an Eezi-Awn Globetrotter for the trailer.

Friday did the mud cave run with the Borregofest crew. Nice relaxing little run up Arroyo Tapiado to the cave. Hadn't been through it for about 5 years, so it was fun to do again.

Saturday, instead of doing a gas guzzling run, Scott had prehiked and planned a hike up to Whale Peak near our campsite. Come to find out, the trail head is in the ravine where we camp! Go figure. We've been staying there for several years and never new it!!! Nice hike of about 1500 ft elevation gain and 6 miles round trip. Some small boulder hopping. Trail was reasonablly well marked with cairns, many of which Scott had done on his prehike Friday. I'll let Scott tell the story of his prehike - can't steal that thunder! Thanks Scott!!!! The view at the top of Whale Peak was spectacular to say the least. Myself, Scott, Dan, Steve (thatsalexus - I think) and super nice girlfriend Natalia (who drove up for the day) were on the hike. Great fun!

Super relaxing weekend with good company, food, wine and fire! Only minor downer was all the sweat bees around camp. Not really stinging bees, despite one attempt on Scott, just somewhat annoying. Put out bowls of water away from camp and that helped draw them away. Hopefully Dan will post up a pic of the bowls!

Brent check out Howling Moon’s tents. They are really nice and I think priced about 10% cheaper and Eezi-Awn’s. I spent some time talking with the guy’s who are importing them to the US at the Off Road Expo. They are really nice and have some features that the Eezi-Awns do not, like the sky roof option, very cool. I don’t even need one and I want one. Hawkeye on here knows the guy too, his drawler’s system was in his truck.

Brent,

I have an array of tents....one of which is the REI Base Camp 6.

For the price, and the REI's return policy if you have any issues/regrets, it's hard to beat for car (errr, truck) camping. It's tall, so it does catch wind, but it's reasonably stable in moderate winds, and ok in a somewhat higher winds with guy lines in place. The vestibules, especially front are HUGE. Note, the tent does require a large swatch of ground to pitch - I think with the fly (and hence vestibules) it requires almost 15 feet front to back. It's pretty quick for two to set up, and I've done it by myself as well.

I've had both Kelty and Sierra Design large tents over the years, but I think the Base Camp 6 is a better value for basic 3 season work; for winter & high winds, I use a lower profile expedition tent.

Sorry I missed you guys this past weekend; by the time I could go it was almost 5 on friday and I just didn't want to do the Friday pm traffic out of LA.........but I'll see you at SnT!

Tare - I have looked at the Howling Moon site and they are nice too. They are one of three that does make a RTT specifically for a trailer.
JG - Dan had a brand new (warranty replacement) BaseCamp 6 from REI, so I got a REAL GOOD look at that along with helping him a little on set up.

Just bummed almost 'having' to do something so quickly. I hate not doing a good deal of research...but not to the extent of Eric. ;)

IIRC - REI does rent tents and that's an option.

Brent - Had a GREAT time this weekend. Thanks Scott for scouting out the hike and not making us take the same route you used the day before. :D I think you guys gave me the hiking bug again and am looking at Camelbacks and associated equipment to get back into it. The last time I did a hike with any elevation gains like that was about 7 years ago which is just sad.

I will post up pics when I get home later tonight.

Bees! They literally were in the camp first thing in the morning and did not leave until 6:00 pm.

Just ordered a Springbar tent. Happy with my decision. Great tent and just talked to customer service to make sure it'll be here in time for SnT. No problem. Will ship today or tomorrow at the latest!!

Good times guys. I'll post up some pic's later, just too too busy now. Thanks for the pork carne asada Brent and the steak and burgers Dan, yum yum. Great weather for hiking and wheeling and the crystal clear skies made sleeping under the stars, well just stellar. ;p We had a solid group on the hike up to Whale Peak, no whiners just a do it attitude. All I gotta say about Steve's new friend he brought along is wow, enough said! Good on ya Steve.
