I've just picked up a 2015 MY14 Prado Kakadu with 167k KMs on it that appeared to be in really good condition. I've now, 2 days later, noticed a sound coming from the turbo that has me thinking the turbo might be on the way out... 🥲

Short video of the sound here: turbo sound

Engine is the 3.0L 1KD turbo diesel.

I've got it booked in for the mechanic to take a look at, but equally interested in this community's thoughts. What do you think?

Assuming it is the turbo, how likely is it that the rest of the engine is beyond saving? The car has a catch can installed and has been serviced on time for its entire life by Toyota (I acknowledge I've got no recourse there).

Unfortunately, most here probably won't be able to address your turbo issue unless they refer to another (probably non-Toyota) vehicle they had with turbo as most (not all) are Yanks.
But, if the motor is a failure, consider sourcing a used one from Japan. They have to swap out engines at less than 100,000 miles (160,000 km). I'm not sure what exactly their law is but a used 4.6 L V8 is only a few thousand dollars, U.S.
Sorry, couldn't be of more assistance. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in!

Ah fair enough. I should've thought of that! Located in the Sydney area.
no worries. There is a Diesel forum in Mud, they may be able to help.

BTW, I'm originally from the Brisbane area.
Funny that one of you are from Sydney and the other Brisbane!
In the early 2000's, my wife and did a surf trip to Fiji for a week and then flew into Sydney, rented a van, no reservations anywhere and gave us over two weeks to drive up the coast surfing wherever it looked good, from Sydney all the way to Brisbane, where we flew out of back home.
Another funny fact: At the time we had a white Toyota Previa van as our family car. When we arrived in Sydney to get our rental van, it was a Toyota Torago, which is the Previa, but non-U.S.! It was even the same color!!
Oh, man, did it take a little getting used to, not just the driving on the wrong side of the road, but everything was just like our van but backwards! Then only constant were the pedals (brake and gas). Every time I went to change lanes I'd turn on the wipers. When it rained, I turned on the turn signals!
But after two weeks driving on the left, and other countries I've driven in that were on the left too, I discovered a rule for driving in other countries: ALWAYS make sure, as the driver, that your body is CLOSEST to the center lane or think of having to open your door towards the center lane! If your driving position is closer to the curb, you're on the wrong side of the road mate!

Oh great. I was born in Brisvegas, but its been many years...

Thanks for the x-ref. I'll check it out.

I originally joined up to Mud when I thought I was going to get an LX570, but this Prado is a far smarter compromise for my situation. Its a shame though, it seems like a great community. Hopefully there is enough Prado-relevant stuff on here for me to get engaged.

Get a Garrett drop in. Call it good. Oem genuine turbo have the problem with sticking vanes or turbine wheel chipped….
