PS. - I won't use your term "fall" for "winter" because it doesn't make much sense here. Almost none of our native trees are deciduous.

That's not why we call it fall. Its becuase it freezes overnight leaving little patches of ice for you to plant your unsuspecting rear end on. :D

just got back from over a 1000 mile trip. the engine seems to be running strong, wander how much blow by is normal on a 2h?

In that 1000 mile trip, how much oil did you loose? If you are not using up like a 1 L or more, I wouldn't worry about. Even if you were loosing more and you still have good power, I'd keep on driving it until it felt bagged or oil use was excessive. Then think about a rebuild.

It will vary from engine to engine. All engines,no matter how new, have SOME blowby. The piston ring against the cyl bore is not a perfect fit and with 1500 psi inside when the fuel burns, there will be some leakage.
The way to gauge any abnormalities is by a compression test or oil usage figures.
If both are good, then an engine is considered servicable.

The other way to test an engine is to put it on a dyno and test for HP.

in that 1000 mile trip it did not burn much oil, i put much less than one liter, i will get a compression check on it again, last compression check about 6 month ago was good. i think i have made a decision to replace the engine cause my rig is too heavy, in addition, my wife demands a power steering and an air condition. i may put my engine on the market, i am researching my option for a new engine right now. assuming compression checks out how much are 2h with 4 speed transmission going for?..thanks again

Even if its using less than a litre per 1000 miles ,a new engine sounds like the better option.
If you want to add PS and AC,the toyota diesels will be easier.
Have you checked out what G&S Cruisers have for sale?

If the engine has high klms its really only suitable as a rebuild but a rebuild that people can see running is always easier to sell.

Factory Nissan TD4.2TI crate engine is on ebay Australia for just over $7000 AUS. Better than a chev diesel swap IMO. I have seen them used from UD Truck wreckers for well over $6000 US. But the shipping won't be cheap from Australia.

OK. But it'll have to wait till I get the RH fender back on Andrew(with the air cleaner and all the other junk that sits on that fender)....

Fenders back on so I took a video this evening with my little digital camera. (I've only ever taken "still" pictures before.)

Here it is. (I had to learn how to "splice videos" and had to join "Youtube" today in order to do this too. ).......

YouTube - My diesel 40 series landcruiser

As you can see, there's not much visible in terms of "blowby". Perhaps there would be more if I had gone for a run in it first and really warmed it up? (But I had the RH wheel off to prevent that.)

All I can say is: your engine is clean!!

Did you feel it puff at all?

Thanks for posting the vid.

I couldn't feel much in the way of blowby. But then the radiator fan draws so much air that it is difficult to tell.

black smoke at 7000 feet elevation

just got back from 3000 mile trip from los angeles to south dakota. took mostly interstate 40 to south dakota then small roads on the way back. the engine did fine except for one thing black smoke out of the tail pipe on altitude above 7000 feet. i am thinking it is due to the thin air at high altitude. is this true? any ajustment i need to make? ideas?????...thankshttp://images.ih8mud.com/images/smilies/doh.gif

More altitude, less oxigen available .. less oxigen, means, much more unburned diesel due to less oxigen.

options ..

1. Turbo :hillbilly:

2. Lees diesel
