Blew engine?

My 4Runner had the same problem. Turned out to be the harmonic balancer.

When my 3FE ate itself I could pull plug wires one by one as it was running and it would quiet up the knocking as soon as I hit the cylinders with the rod knock.

Might try raising your rpms like you did and try pulling plug wire at #1 and then replace and go through each cylinder and see if the knock changes.

Mine blew the oil galley plug. These 3fes are tough though, I'd expect you to lose compression long before your bearings go...
