Endurance bike racing is popular and there are a lot of races. There are the ordinary 24hr ones I do, and some insane ones like the Trans Rocky types that last for days. You start at 12 noon, at 7:30pm you are not allowed on the course without lights, and they end at 12 noon the next day. You can enter them as a solo (insane), dual team (ouch), and a team of 4 (slightly less ouch). I've done a few as dual and a few as 4 man. The 2am hallucinations are amazing.

Absolutely. Even better hallucinations solo.

Easy,

1) Remove the Shimano Brakes,
2) Replace with Avid Mechanicals
3) Ride bike and never bleed brakes again.

After my go around with my Avid Juicy 7's, I said no more hydro brakes. The Mechanical work nearly as well, and more importantly, they always work.

Avid Mechs are great. I have no problem with mine, been running them on one bike or another for close to 5 years. I also have a set of Avid Juicy 7s . . . after 4 years, I think I need to bleed the rear brake. Amazing brakes.

And hydro hoses popping on a ride does happen. Happened to a buddy of mine on a ride we were on. Made for some interesting downhills. I tend to think he's an isolated case, though. He spells "maintenance" either r-e-p-a-i-r or r-e-p-l-a-c-e, usually after some catastrophic failure.

There are braided stainless covered lines with metal ends available, I found that in my research, I think on a mtb magazine site. They were mentioned as a little heavier, but worth it if you crash a lot and your lines get kinked. No mention of protection from popping or snagging lines.
