87 4runner (bone stock)

Is this oil? Seems to only happen upon start up. Doesn't smoke going down the road or when crawling in 4 low. I have only owned this vehicle for a short time.

Your thoughts?

My 85 4Runner does the same thing - it is oil blowing past the rings. Just because it doesn't smoke doesn't mean it isn't 'burning' oil. It most likely is smoking; you just don't see it because it is only at higher RPMs.

My 84 also, oil's getting the rings, or possibly the valve guide seals are bad.

it's prolly just water built up in the muffler and it get a little carbon in it on the way down the pipe. that's all my black stuff is.

If you find out that your truck is using oil, consider this:

When I first bought my 85 it was going through a quart every 500 miles during normal driving. I did some experimenting with different oils and, using either Castrol High Mileage 10W40 or Supertech High Mileage 10W40, I only use 1 quart every 1000 miles.

hey leftcoast,
LeftCoast I just got a 3.0 swapped yesterday, and upon firing it up, a whole bunch of that **** came out. I'm hoping it's just blow-by from the previous catastrophic failure, and will clear itself out.
After my engine was rebuilt same thing, scared me and made me want to punch mechanic, however after a month or so it stopped. Must have been just like you say caught up in cat and muffler and finally goes away. I think it'll be just fine. Hopefully:cheers:
