Hey guys, what would be considered required upgrades for some 9.5” bj74 axles if a guy was to switch from 35s to 37s?
Currently they are rebuilt to stock with 4.11s and lockers front and rear on 35x12.5s

You probably won't like the 4.11s with 37s if you're crawling. If it doesn't crawl then stock axles are fine. If you do crawl, you will want chromoly axles and 4.56 minimum or tcase gears.

Mostly is just a trail rig honestly. Little snow every so often. No hardcore wheeling. Would be nice to still drive to the trailheads like i currently do. Would a guy see more benefit from an axle regear or t case gears?

I don't know what transfer case you have since it is an Izuzu, but to me, tcase gears are better. Do you even need 37s? Or just because you want them.

Ohh my bad. It actually is a Toyota 13bt with an a440f and vac operated T case.. all yanked from a scrap bj74 (1986)

And yeah 37s would be ideal. We tend to get a lot of snow in the winter here (Montana) and the 35s don’t get me far.

Put 3:1s in the tcase and leave the axle gears. You could do 4:1s but they are a bit much for something that isn't a rock hopper. Put chromolys in when you're ready and go drive it.

Thanks for the insight! That’s the direction I was thinking as well. Any idea how much of a task it is to fit 3:1 gears? Can it be done at home typically? I do have a mill and a mostly functioning brain lol.

It's covered a bit here on the forums, give it a search. Essentially they fit but sometimes you need to clearance the internal housing a little bit.
