Need to make a recommendation to my son. He wants more top end power. ( don't we all)the 3b will get a turbo. Has 235/85/16 tyres. Should he go 4:11?or 4:56? There will be lots of hiway travel in future. But exploring trails is normal use for his job and recreation. What would be ideal rpm for a 3b at 100kph?

My stock BJ70 turns about 2200 RPMs at 60mph (100kph). Going up to 4.11 differential gears would raise RPMs by 11% to about 2450rpm, while 4.56 gears would raise RPMs by 23% to about 2700rpm. Power increases by the same percentages -- by 11% with 4.11 gears and by 23% with 4.56 gears. Similarly, there is a drop in fuel efficiency.

With my own driving over the past 30 years with the BJ70, I would not want to run the Land Cruiser all day at anything above about 2500rpms. Hope this helps you make a decision.

What gears does he have now? I thought they were nearly all 4.11. You could get some aftermarket gears for the transfer case. Personally, for hwy and offroad use combined, stock is best.
Do you know what T/case he has?

4.11s will be fine with 235s. I ran 4.56s with 255/85R16s on my old BJ70 and it was about right.
Now if he thinks he might go to a bigger tire in the future...
