Hi, I could use some help here.
I can buy a May 1984 BJ40 with 5-gearbox, powersteering and front disc brakes. I assumed it was a BJ42, but the vendor already corrected me twice in our email correspondence, saying: "It's not a BJ42, it is a BJ40".
Is this possible? When did the production of the BJ40 end?
I already asked for a copy of the registration papers and the chassis number, and I'm waiting for his answer.
Please let me know what's your opinion on this.
Jacobus.

Hi Jacobus

A 1984 BJ40 (B engine) is not possible to have been sold by Toyota in this part of the world (it would have had to have been a BJ42 with a 3B engine).

But I think it is possible for the European market.

Would be the first i hear about, 1984 ands 5 speed makes sens, not the 40... Ask for serial number and all the number on the plate on the firewall under the hood. Then go through the TLC FAQ

it might be a BJ40 pic below from parts catalogue ??
shows the B used till 84/08
I was looking up part# for the short block for years between 80-86.

but it also only lists the 5spd being used on the BJ42

Thanks for your reactions. The vendor faxed me a copy of the registration papers. It says indeed "Toyota Landcruiser BJ40", but the same document shows that the Chassis/Frame number contains xxxxBJ42xxxxxxx.

I bought another 1984 BJ42 myself which I imported a couple of weeks ago from Germany to The Netherlands. The Registration Office (called RDW) couldn't find the right Type Description in their (quite messy) archives.
Finally I showed them a document that I obtained from the official Toyota-importer in The Netherlands, and with this document the RDW was able to "identify the vehicle", under the rather general description "Toyota Landcruiser Hardtop D".

So my own car which is definitely a BJ42 has also a different type description in the registration papers, but as far as I can see this other BJ42 which is for sale now, was not imported from another country, so I'm still wondering why the description is inaccurate.

Anyway, I don't think there are serious problems, like if the car was stolen or something like that, because as far as I can see, all the documentation is there and the numbers match.

Right now I can buy a BJ42 which has a 13BT Turbo engine. The car seems to be in good condition, and the owner recently bought a Hummer, which is something quite different if you ask me, but anyway he doesn't want to keep 2 cars.

Thanks again for your input!!

Does the 13BT have a 4spd or a 5spd transmission?

13BT 5 sped

The 13BT has a 5 speed. But I've decided not to buy it, partly because I'm expecting too many problems in the procedure to get it admitted in The Netherlands. Sometimes the guys from the RDW can give you a very hard time when the car is not "original" enough. And Italy is just too far away for me.
Instead I bought a second (april 1983) BJ42 with 3B engine, 5 speed in Germany, but originally from Swiss. Very good service record, chassis/frame is in perfect condition, but very many corrosion spots on the doors, the back tub and all the usual spots.
The april 1983 thing is nice, because this means the car just turned 25 years (and therefore officially on oldtimer here in The Netherlands), so I don't have to pay any tax, and the assurance is less then 100 euro per year. For my other (1984) BJ42 I still have to pay one year tax = 1750 euro.
If you're interested in the BJ42 with 13BT you can find it on
AutoScout24=
The vendor speaks some English if you don't make it too difficult for him. He's selling because he bought a Hummer (that's what he told me anyway).

Ah I didn't know that URL's are not welcome on this forum.
Anyway I found the car using www.autoscout24.nl and selecting Italy (or entire Europe if you like) and Toyota Landcruiser between 1980 and 1985.
The vendor asks 7000 euro and the car is a BJ40 from January 1980 that has been "updated" and "upgraded" with all kinds of goodies.
