I was in dire straights... I was changing out the diaphragm in my 75 BJ40 this weekend and taking off the throttle linkage to get a little room. Snap! The brittle 47-year-old plastic ball joint end on piece of the linkage broke right into. Not surprising, considering the age and what they must have been through. And I thought to myself, "self. Here we go on another Toyota diesel parts hunt in the good ol' USA. This is going to suck"

But... a quick search on the google and lo and behold, steel replacements were available right here in Colorado.

The order has been placed, the seller replied quickly and the new and improved replaced parts will be here by this weekend.

Hopefully this will be a good source for others at some point

To put a bow on this one. Got the metal replacements and they appear to be very well made with an ingenious clip that is easy to get on. The dimensions over all are spot on.
What I like about the clip is that once you slide the straight part into the holes to secure the ball in the joint, you just rotate it around and it clips nice and easy to the shaft.

Anybody in need of replacing the plastic pieces, it's hard to go wrong with well made metal replacements for $30.

Hi

You have an old post, but I'm hoping you can help me. I'm actually going to buy those exact linkages for my 1975 BJ40 B engine

Are there instructions on how to adjust those linkages? What exactly do they control? I'm hoping it would improve efficiency of the engine

While i have you, assuming you see this, could you please send me a picture of your throttle cable attachment assembly? Mine was modified i don't think the configuration is as it should be

Cheers

Tamarindo! What a great place to have an old BJ40. I did a summer in CR back in the mid-90s. Caught the travel bug there and have had it ever since.
Been a while since I looked at this. I'll take some pictures of it this week, as soon as I get a chance. Best tuning I've done on my BJ was to adjust the air/fuel mixture to match my elevation. The end pieces that I bought were just to connect the rods to the levers. Not a lot of adjustment available, IIRC

i'll get more pictures posted soon.

Yeah, I've adjusted the fuel/air mixture to reduce the black smoke. But I'm finding the power significantly reduced and it got my thinking if the fuel cable was supposed to be linear in the way it pulls. Or should it be progressively more as you push on the throttle, in other words, not linear. When i looked at the end of the cable on the engine side, i saw that the previous owner mucked with it. I've searched online to find diagrams, videos or pictures to see what it should be like, but no luck

oh yeah! I forgot. They are attached.
