I am very happy with the ride of the 33x9.5's on stock wheels, my green 82 came with old and tired 31's, 1st thing I did was to go 33x9.5 and MAN OH MAN it rode better, tracked better and IMOP looked better. I run my 33x9.5s at 32psi, they can take up to 50psi

I just took my 33x12.50's (on 15x8 wheels) off and put back on a set of 31's (on stock wheels) and was amazed at how much better the pig rode. But I hate the look now. Do the 33x9.50's and stock wheels ride any better than the 33x12.50's on aftermarket ones?

yep I swaped to 4.10's in the fj60, not a huge numerical differnce but a huge real word improvment.

This is the HUGE advantave of an FJ62...they come stock with 4.11's FJ60's come stock with 3.72's. I actually swapped out complete 3rds from a 62 into my 60...

they will fit just fine. But the power loss depends on a few things, the biggest is the state of tune of your motor. I might not have swaped gears in mine if I had rebuilt the carb 1st........getting the secondiary working made a big difference.

I'm new to the Landcruisers and need new tires. Sounds like you guys are saying that 33x9.5s will fit ok, but I'm worried about power loss. I live in Harrisonburg VA with the mountains. The TLC is not my only car so I have my accord if I need to get somewhere quickly but don't want to drain so much power it's no fun to wheel in.

I have ample power now. Motor is in good shape. What kind of power loss are we talking about? Will it make the truck sluggish? Or just not as strong? A power loss similar to having it full of people and gear or like towing a medium sized trailer. I realize that these are relative terms and all but I definalty don't want to drop the money in tires and have this thing not go on the trail.
thanks

Really hard to answer questions about power loss going to 33's, but I'll give it a try...
My 60 has strong compression (~165 across all 6), though the carb could use a rebuild, and it needs a tune-up. I put on the 33's for three reasons:
31's looked too small on my 3" lift
Increase clearance
Rubber overdrive

I drive in the moutains, sometimes fully loaded, so being a dog was a concern. No question, it bogs down some. However, for my driving, the benefit of an "overdrive" outweights the few times I bog down. If you compare my trip times w/31 vs 33's I don't think there's a difference. So I'm a bit slower going uphill, I'm faster going back down.

The single biggest drawback for me is in my daily driving in Seattle, I end up slipping the clutch more on hill starts. Actually, I've tried to find routes that don't require steep hill starts. Even with that, if you offered to swap out my 33's back to 31's for free, I'd pass.

Hope this helps...

I was running some very worn Bridgestone Dualers, size 31x10.5-15. A very road-biased tires.

I just put 33x10.5 BFG TA KO's on my stock rims (1990 FJ62) I added the Specter extended shackles for some lift. It really tracks nicely now with very little wandering. I'd guess that castor is still a bit off but when I get the 4 degree shims under there she should track like a champ.

I was expecting the handling in corners to be worse since I was going to a
taller sidewall, but it's not. Both are Load Range C, but I'm guessing the
BFG's are just stronger overall.

Tire noise is minimal, only slightly more then the Dualers were.

I noticed on the way home from TDR that when I really put my foot into it at
around 45 mph and the trans. kicked down to 2nd there was a LOT of tire
squirm/torque steer from the Lockrite in the back. That seems minimized as
well, probably due to a better contact patch and heavier tire weight. It's a
LOT harder to get that 2nd gear kickdown at higher speeds now though so it
may be just in my head. (gearing, tire circumf. etc.)

Overall powerloss is minimal from the 31's. No trouble maintaining highway speeds and around town is just fine as well. Speedo is off quite a bit of course.

They look GREAT! Really fill the wheel wells up but look narrow enough to
stuff instead of rub. I'll try to find a ditch to play in this weekend and
see how that all pans out under flex.

^ That's a nice shot! Pretty cruiser, how many times has it been repainted up there in salt country?

The POx2 put that marroon on, wish they'd done the door jams as well. I hated it at first, but like it well enough now. :)

Truck is holding up well to the rust. Spent most of it's life on Nantucket so I don't think it saw a lot of winters. Rear quarters are beat and there are a few spots here and there but the frame is really, really nice and it runs like a top, only 150k.

Picture is in Woodstock, VT at Mt. Tom last weekend. Perfect fall day except for the clouds.

Any time you put taller tires on, it's going to effect your power. How noticeable this is depends on how often you tow anything, drive above 6000 feet, or drive long steep grades. ie. how much do you need that torque? I want to be able to tow and pass, so anything more than 31s and I'm regearing.

A bone stock 62 will have more pull/torque than a 62 with 33s and 4.56 gears.

If anyone's interested ------

I passed Connie today and she was in the 62.......I;ll tell ya from the front the tall skinnies and ARB look so damn cool with the stock suspension, just a neat look. And she LOVES em, its the 1st thing she wanted when she got it.......when the old 62 got hit one of the 1st things she told me...."the tires are OK" :D them damn old 33x9.5 MT's have been on a dozen cruisers..........so I bought her a new set :)

yep BFG's.........lots of them :)

Hey pimp, you said that you run 33 9.5's? What brand BFG?

Local dealer has a good deal on BFG All ter. 33x10 how will this effect ride. Should I jump on it or wait and get 33x9.5's. I'm really afraid of the power loss but the lower RPM on the interstate will be nice. What would you guys do?

no MT only AT's

BFG does not list a 9.50 for any of the mud terrains over 30" what 33" is being referenced as a 9.50? I must be missing something here...any help is appreciated.

the ride would only be better IMOP with the 10.5, will they fit "I" am not sure, will you have much more power loss over a 9.5.....prolly not much if any

I had my BFG AT 33x9.5s mounted saturday morning. Took it to the mountains all day sunday. Previously I was running 235x75s :( so I lost a little torque but the truck drove amazing both on a off the road. I would recomend these tires but hten I don't have anything to compare to. My motor has 217000 miles on it and it's getting 130psi more or less across all 6 so not the best shape but runs on the road good enough for me. 4x4 low will still tackle anything I have the balls to run up for me.
