So I ended up buying this very clean 2002 LX that I was looking at and it has an almost new set of stock size Bigfoot AT tires on it. They seem to ride decent but I haven't tried them off pavement yet. I also found out the the Big O warranty goes with the owner not the tires so I'm not covered and they didn't want my name or anything in case of a recall.

My question is, are these tires any damn good? Couple of the local tire shop guys said they were likely Kelly or Goodyear and just to use them up. What do you Cruiser guys think?

A tire is your only connection to the road, make sure it's a quality one.

Btw did you see the info I posted on CL? I haven't checked yet.

My 2002 from Arizona had a stock set of Michelins (put on in 2005). I thought the 4 years of Az heat had cause them to start cracking a little, so talked the :princess: into the lift and new tires. Like loud said, tires are your connection to the road, so as long as they are in good shape, wear them out...

You have quite possibly one of the cheapest tires ever made on one of the most expensive vehicles ever made :) You didn't buy a Liberty, you purchased a Lexus. If it were my rig, I would sell the tires locally (MUD or CL) and get a set of Revo's or Toyo's or Michelin's.... something other than BIG O.

BTW, you could take two weeks off of work and read tire threads on MUD full time... meaning there is plenty of info out there-frankly, it can be overwhelming! I have gleaned lots of info from the 80 section specifically, as there are just more posts. I also really trust the opinions of some of the "long timers" from the 80's section.

Some old but good reading....

To me, the ONE time I (or my :princess:) would demand just a bit more of the maximum or peak amount of performance, that could very well be the "once in a lifetime" life or death situation, a tire like this MIGHT let me down. To me, the benefits of spending the $750 on a proven performer is not nearly worth taking ANY risk (which COULD be associated with a cheaper brand of tire). I usually replace my tires when they get down to about 1/3 tread left.

I have NO experience with this tire or brand.

So you have no first hand experience yet you're giving advice based on what others have said, some of which is very positive? I should listen to your advice why, exactly?

Nothing personal but this is one of the problems with discussion on the internet - rumors, second hand info, advice based on what others say, etc.

I would like to get first hand experience from people who've owned these tires or are in the tire business.

We have them on our Suburban and think they are great. I'd run them until it's time for new tires. Or you really want to spend some money on your truck. Near new Big-O tires are arguably safer than 1/2 worn out "top of the line" tires.

If you would have read the thread in the 80's forum... there is plenty of good and some bad from mudders who have owned these tires. Enough bad that I made my decision and shared that with you. Enough bad that the original thread (from 2006) stuck in my mind so I actually did some research on Big O at that time and was amazed at the BAD stories about their poor performing tires.... but hey, your tires might be the "new design". There really are not many tire threads on Mud discussing high speed blowouts and multiple tire failures. Recent discussions continue on the net about the poor quality of these tires and the horrible service of these shops from supposed actual customers/owners. I guess you could speculate that all of these dissatisfied customers/owners are just making stuff up about their tires and or spreading nasty rumors.

What do you Cruiser guys think?
No offense taken on my part... you asked.

You can find plenty of facts about Big O/TDC Corp/Sumitumo on the net... no need for rumors!

Perhaps you could have mentioned this in your first post... I would have kept my yapper shut :)

Big-O is primarily a Western US brand, don't think they're even available out East.

CSG - they're a good tire. Last I checked, they're not that cheap (same price as a BFG AT), they have a great tread life, they're very good in the snow, and lots of people run them. So unless you need a much more aggressive tire I don't know why you'd consider getting rid of them, especially if they're almost new.

We've had snow and rain since I got the Cruiser with these tires and they seem to handle it fine. I bit noisier on the road than the Michelin LTX M/S tires I'm used to on my other vehicles but they seem to be decent for my needs.

I'll change them out if I learn something specific or they let me down but otherwise, I think I'll use them up.

I have Big O 285's on my rig. Came pretty new with it from the seller. At first I thought of replacing them immediately with the more popularly mentioned 285's - but I decided to wear the tire down before replacing them. I have had pretty good luck with other Big Os. They do not cup as much as my GY's or Mich...

Have been very happy with them. I have not done serious rock crawling with them. But for the few trails in Moab, the Tetons and trails around Reno that I have taken them, I had zero issues. Snow, mud, rain and gravel roads.

I did not know that the warranty does not transfer - I think it does. At least the free balance and rotate every 3000 miles does... Lately I have driven the Reno to Jackson Hole R/T every weekend. Tires are pretty quiet cruising at 85. Handles well in Teton Pass - all the time. I have placed almost 25K in the last 3.5 months. Getting ave of 15 mpg even with my RTT and Sahara's up front - using mid level gas.

I have had good luck with Big O's. Have them on my 94 4Runner, have them on my wifes AWD Sienna - ditched the run flats as soon as they were worn. So, yes, they may not be the most expensive, but they sure get balanced and rotated frequently for free both in Reno and in Jackson Hole. And they are the only shop in Jackson Hole that has national reach. I believe that Big O becomes NTW when you head east...

I suggest that you run them till you need to replace them. Spend your $$ on an OME lift kit to prepare it for the 285's that you will get once those wear down. Good luck.

This is just a follow-up five years later! I still have these tires and they are between 40-50% with about 25k miles on them. Other than ice (fair), they have performed very well in all conditions. I learned they were made for Big O by Cooper (Cooper told me). They are an LT C load tire and NOT, like I originally thought, the OE size but 265/75/16's. I suffered some cupping, partly due to a lack of rotation and mostly due to the need for a front alignment.

We no longer have a Big O in my town but twice, once in Boise and once in SoCal, they took care of me at no charge so the warranty, apparently, goes with the tire, not the original owner.

I have taken them on some pretty rough local two tracks and they perform just fine.
