The Opining is nearly over. The trip is eminent. T minus 2 days........
Dating back to 10 years, Jim Alexander and I would always take a big trip out west to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. We did Phoenix 4 times and went to Clayton once and Las Cruces. After he passed the tradition died but thanks to Andy and Patrick, the tradition will live on.
Since we are inside 60 hours until kickoff, it is time to stop the Opine and get ready for the real deal.
Last week we were fortunate to have Fireman and two of his girls sign on to the trip taking Mardis' spot.
Most of the sites at Big Bend only allow 2 vehicles so we will be split up at night so we are gearing our campsites around places that have 2 campsites close together. Also, you cannot sign up for a backcountry site until 24 hours ahead and in person. We will sort out our stays when we his Persimmon Gap at 9 am Thursday morning. We have an good idea of where we are staying in the park, just not the specific sites.
Trip starts Wednesday am at 5 am with a wake up and meet by PMc's house. From there we scoop up Andy in West Funroe and head to Rudy's Arlington.
Ft Stockton is our destination for the night. We should get there in time to get some good Mexican food and meet Fireman et all.
Breakfast then head to the park.
Thursday and Friday we will do and see Big Bend National Park. Saturday am we will head up to the Big Bend Ranch State Park. We will spend the rest of Saturday there and spend the night. Sunday we will ride the park all day and late afternoon we will make our way out of the State Park and head north toward I-10. We have to play this part by ear but we want to be near the interstate so we can make it home on MLK Monday.
I can't wait for this Opining to be over and be on the road. Look here for the many many live updates.
