BIG 380mm Brakes and BBS Forged 18" wheels?

Recently, a stupid good deal on full front and rear four wheel Stoptech big brake kits crossed my path. Unfortunately, a little research into the kits gave a minimum wheel diameter requirement of 20", and that is something that just won't fit into the requirements needed for this rig. An 18" wheel, though, that will still fit with the desired sidewall height. Stoptech supplies a nice brake kit clearance template that can be printed out at home. After a couple of attempts, a template with proper dimensions was produced, and transferred to some cardboard.

So on to trial fitting... upon shoving said template inside a stock Tundra 18" cast alloy wheel, it was very apparent that it was not going to fit in the radial plane. It's not even close, and even with a 1.25" spacer pushing the wheel outward, it's still a big negative. Then the forged 18" TRD BBS wheel came out! Knowing that the smaller 17" TRD Rock Warrior version has special high clearance barrels that clear a 355mm system, my hopes were high for fitting. Unfortunately, the template didn't quite clear the inner bump. However, with a 1.25"spacer (giving a 28mm offset) there appears to be just enough room in the tightest spot - it exceeds Stoptech's minimum of 2mm. Everywhere else is WFO, with room for wheel weights and all.

Now, nothing here is in stone until the kits arrive and all is physically bolted up and test driven. I prefer stock offsets, but a measurement in the +30mm area should prove successful, it has in the past... So right now, things look very good for fitting up some serious brakes on the 200 Series with an 18" wheel. Six piston calipers up front with 380 x 35mm rotors, and four piston with 380 x 32mm out back. The stock ebrake is retained.

More than enough room with the 1.25" spacer, a 1" spacer might even clear. Time to mock it up on a spindle! From that point on, tweaking and clearancing to see how much more it can be pushed will be the objective. The yellow calipers work great for pics, but they will be stripped and recoated in a more appropriate color before being placed into service. More pictures to come.

I go thru rear brakes in 9-12 months. Not sure why. I switched from TRD pads to akebano. Same results. I do have an icon lift and my front end is leveled now along with my heavy ko2s. I'm a bit lead footed as I am used to AMG brakes. Would love better stopping power and longer life brakes. I've been contemplating getting the brake kit used by the armored LC for the rears.
 
Yes! My wife and I use up a set of rear pads and rotors every year. The rear rotors have poor airflow... thus, they run hotter than they should... of course, this wears pads at a faster rate. Eventually, they begin to fade out, which causes the braking load to shift mostly to the front. Stoptech has performed some good testing and it shows this is the case.

I heavily considered building my own, even started the process, but insurance said no way. The armored kits look nice, but having the increased 15" diameter under an 18" wheel at 1/2 the price floats my boat. Actually, it's like getting the BBS Wheel for free.
 
I can’t say how long these will last, but I recently upgraded to DBA 4000 T3 rotors front and rear, and XP650 pads, and crown stainless lines. I’m heavy at about 8400#. This new setup is fantastic. I haven’t measured fade yet, but the braking is more linear, and sensitive, and they really have great stopping power. The tires are now my obvious weak link in braking but this new setup will seriously put you through the windshield. Night and day difference. I’ve had various BMWs and Benz roadsters and I hated the brakes on this 18LX, but this is a drastic improvement.

I wish you had released this a week ago. Got my rears done this year before my xmas road trip. Will wait 9-12 months before ordering the stoptech kit. I hope this works without any spacer on the 17" trd/ko2 wheels combo. When I was younger I was warned heavily against using spacers.
 
The DBA stuff looks great, the improved rotor material and vane style will help a bit. The hotter pads will take more before they fade and help with feel. Ultimately though, it's the same size as stock. More significant gains will always come from larger parts that can deal more efficiently with the energy.

These 380's will not fit the Rock Warrior 17" wheels, 355ish will be the max. The armored kits have something size appropriate, though. I'll inquire further.

Spacers, when properly designed, can work just fine. Technically, the brake rotor qualifies as a spacer between the wheel and hub... fwiw.
 
I’m also interested in whatever technical details we can get on the armor spec brakes. I seem to remember something about 2-piece rotors with stock calipers being available.. not sure whether this is what was on the armored ones or not.
 
If there’s any interest, I have a new set of PFC 2-piece rotors that designed for the SOCOM rigs. I purchased them from lgop, not realizing they won’t fit on the 16+.

Can you post the weights?

Also side-by-side of calipers and brackets if possible.

I doubt many people will end up being able to do this setup but I’m curious of the numbers.
 
Front calipers.

Stoptech is a 6 piston w/ 38 40 42 piston diameters giving 7552 mm2
Stock Advics is a 4 piston w/ 51 51 piston diameters giving 8171 mm2

Stoptech claims this area will give the proper amount squeeze and torque through the increased lever arm of the larger rotor and pad size.

Stoptech caliper w/ bracket and pads 13.5 lbs
Advics calipers w/ pads 20 lbs.

The Stoptech caliper is a bit larger than stock, but nothing crazy.

Since Stoptech already produces these, that will depend on how much modification is required to get proper fit up with the 18" BBS wheels. There is a good chance I will offer these.

i've swapped over the front, and get a lot of nose dive.

may be interested in the rear portion of this "kit" to even things up a bit.
 
The rear kit alone would likely bias the brakes severely towards the rear. How are your rear brakes holding up? Running the larger Tundra brakes up front made little difference in the length of rear brake life.

Did the initial bite improve over the oem LC?
 
not so much of the initial bite, but i tow a boat trailer with no brakes, and 35s.
when people get stupid around you, its nice to be able to slow things down in a hurry.
