Hello,

Newb question here. I am looking to change out the tires on my new Cruiser. Is anyone running BFG Rugged Trail AT (265/75/16)?

I have heard mixed reviews, and was hoping to get some clarification from you all. This is a second car/DD, so I need something that handles well on the road, as that is where the truck will be 90% of the time.

I found these tires for $89 a piece, and I wonder if this is one of those instances that it seems too good to be true...

Worst OEM tire I've run in 30 years of 4WD ownership.

Came standard on our 2000 Tundra LTD, replaced within 5K miles for an immediate improvement in ride & handling.

Spoke with a Tacoma owner whose wear indicators showed @ <25K.

IMO, they are barely suitable for on road. The tread pattern is way too tight, and they will hydroplane if it looks like rain. They should not be considered an AT tire. They do last a long time, 50k plus, but that is about the only good I can say about them. Both of my Super Duties came with this from the factory and I have experience with them. Just my $.02...

Run away. I had these on my tundra when I bought it, 3/4 tread left. SUCK on wet pavement, SUCK on snow/ice, LOTS of sidewall flex for a load range C tire (LT265/70/16).
A slight uphill stoplight in the rain and I had to use 4hi if I wanted to depart without wheelspin. I'm pretty light on the skinny pedal when driving it to begin with, but anytime the pavement was wet I had to drive like a geriatric or slide all over. I tried everything between 23 and 40 psi with zero improvment. 500lbs in the bed and they'd still slip, plus the sidewall roll was even more noticable.

The still had 1/3 tread but I'd had enough, so I swapped them out a couple weeks ago. I'm now running mastercraft courser c/t's and love them so far (and a friend reports an average of 60k miles/set), but they're probably more aggressive than what you're wanting.

If you want a good road oriented all terrain, check out the bridgestone dueler revos.

Thanks for the quick reply! I will steer clear of these tires... I was about to pull the trigger and buy these things.

I think I will look at Revos, they are expensive, but I have heard nothing but good things. Is there any modifications needed to run 285/75/16s? How off will the speedo and odo be?

Where did you find them for $89 a piece? I have 265/70/16 BFG on my 04 Tacoma and they currently have 54K miles. I'm looking for a decent tires to replace them though. I think for 89 bucks, ain't that bad and if you periodically rotate these tires at every 3K miles, they will last.

I found them at Sams club for $89.

Tyler,

I am currently running those tires and I really like them. I have had them for almost two winters, both with more than usual snow. They work great in all of the conditions I have used them in, including heavy snow and rain. I have never experienced hydroplaning or poor handling. I will also say the wear on them has been great. I have almost 40K on them and they are wearing very well. I will probably replace them with something new at the beginning of the summer, perhaps using FJ Cruiser 17" steel wheels. The short of it is they have worked great for me.

Pete

Are you looking at the LT265's or the P265's?
If LT's then OK. If P rated then NO WAY. We've run tons of the LT's on fleet trucks. Good durability, Good mileage. Not a lot of off-road traction, it is a very dense tread pattern.
P rated suck. Most of the haters on here are speaking of the P's.

IIRC BFG never made this size in an LT. Which may be why the sidewall flexed so much.

They are 265/75/16s, so I assume its the LT version, I will double check. Its a tough call because the price is right, but I do not want crap tires regardless of the perceived "value"...

Ran them bald at 38k. All highway miles and rotated at every 5k on my 08 tundra. They are a cheap tire that was made to keep the cost down on new trucks. If you look at specs they start with much less tread than most tires.

Were these LT or P version?

BTW, I really appreciate the dialog from you all! This forum is really helpful to someone new to Toyota. I have to admit, that I am a Range Rover convert, and honestly I dont really miss that POS hahaha. It did have a better highway "personality" but thats about the only thing the RR beat my LC in...

Ya, i had Rugged Trails on my Tundra and they sucked big time...Couldn't wait to burn through them and then got some BFG AT's.... Much happier then. I am running AT's on my 80 and have been pretty happy.

Mine said LT265/70R16 on the sidewall. Also stated Load Range C, max 50psi. I don't know where they came from since I bought the truck used, but I do know the difference between P metric and LT metric tires.

Easily the worst tires I've ever owned.

On my 03 F350 they were 265/75/16 and sucked on anything but dry pavement. Driving on grass required 4x4. My 06 F250 had 265/70-17s and the tires were worse than the previous ones. Both trucks' tires were E rated. I'm currently running Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors on the 06 and they are so much better in every way.

The BFG Rugged Trail TA is primarily a low cost OEM tire. They are not reflective of BFG's other, much better tires such as the A/T and M/T. Why they continue to sell these tires which really harm their reputation is beyond me.

took them off Dads new Tundra after he hydroplaned a couple times - folks, this was in Arizona! like others have stated, the outside tread is solid and does not let the built up water escape causing hydroplaning. Also on simple inclines on dirt roads with some gravel, he would get considerable slippage due to the lack of biting edges. I swapped him into a set of Goodyear silent armor tires and he cant stop talking about the difference both on and off road. Spend double the money and get ten times the tire!

So, the general consensus is these things SUCK! haha. Thanks a lot for the feedback. I will have to save my pennies and get a better tire like Revos or LTX A/T2.
