I just finished installing a Painless harness in my 65 FJ40.
Its a sweet setup but a lot of work. It took me about 60-80 hours from start to finish.

Google Painless Performance Products for more info.

search will show that lots of folks see litle difference betwen Painless, ez, etc, but there is a big difference in price

If your cruiser is stock, the OEM harness is the best, hands down. You will probably find that renewing the botched parts of the stock harness is much easier and cheaper than replacing it with a generic harness. Even if you use an after market harness, you will be doing a lot of hand work to make it work with the later cruiser turn signals and brake lights.

I agree with Pin Head, I would stick with the OEM harness unless it's in really sad shape. Unless you have fire damage or something along those lines, I bet most of it is still pretty good. If you can replace existing sections of wire, it'll be a lot easier. I did a painless harness about 10-12 years back, it's a lot of work, and took a bunch of time to do. Honestly I didn't know jack about electrical, and I was also dealing with a Ford engine swap at the time. It was a good learning experience however. Like Pin Head said you'll have to deal with turn signals and brake lights, I also had problems with the wiper. The kits are universal and are not fully plug and play.

I've installed both and i'd pick EZwiring hands down, half the price and essentially the same product. I'll never understand why people always want the painless system, they aren't that different.

I am completing (I hope) this weekend a Painless harness swap. It is a long process with a bit of head scratching. I got my harness of Ebay from for about $250.00 so the price was not bad. If I had to do it again with the amount of work that you end up doing yourself and the frustration I would go with a recondictioned harness or pick one up from someone (see previous comments) who has one available.

I've never seen the EZ harness. Assuming they use the same quality wire (guessing so) I would buy it over the Painless. The Painless harness is nice, but nothing special, just a bunch of wires and a fuse block. The reasons I did Painless (about 10 years ago) was I got a decent price from a guy off the LCLM, and I don't remember there being that many aftermarket harnesses available.

I think some people who buy the Painless kit get caught up in the idea that they are buying a LC specific harness and it'll be easier to do, when really you're buying a generic harness.

i just happened to have removed a complete harness from an 81 let me know if your interested ill make you a deal

I'm interested in the '81 harness if it is not otherwise spoken for. (Sorry for the hijack.) ;p

EZ Wiring does have the better price, but we've stayed with Painless because of the elaborite instruction manual, and because they include numerous "what if" extra plugs/wires for numerous variables. What we don't do is sell the more expensive harness that Painless list specifically for the Landcruiser, we offer the #10102 which is the same thing and cost a little less (not an earth shattering price difference, but measurable).

We use Painless in hot rod projects for "name recognition" ... EZ has been in the last four of my own personal projects. Wire is thicker than the Painless. The terminated ends are all complete and shrunk, just like painless. And the GM interface plugs are the same for both kits. Bottom line is Wiring's WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT. I agree with Downey, having a kit with ridiculously easy to follow instructions is great for consumer applications.

I spent the money on Painless for the instruction manual and for the way all the wires are marked.

I bought Part#10143 Weatherproof Harness.

The one thing I was dissappointed with: when I called their tech line with questions (the turn signal/headlight switch was a bitch) the Tech could not help me, they only support domestic vehicles. Which I thought was crappy. They sell it but do not support it.

Made me figure it out on my own. Took more time.

Now that its done I love it.

Can new OEM terminals be purchased to update or rebuild an old harness? I am dealing with a 66 FJ45LV and I don't even remember what the harness looked like it has been so long since I pulled it. I have a feeling I cut some of the wires bc I was too stupid to not.

I have used both the Painless and the EZ Wiring and found them to be very similar. I prefered the Painless fuse panel slightly but I can't justify the extra cost(almost double). My current project involves a 2007 J**p Wrangler and a 500 hp. 502 and I am going with the EZ Wiring harness.
