after talking to some of you guys im set on getting a turbo for my BJ42. Since im making a snorkel I might as well put a turbo in the rig. Making a manifold and what not is going to be pretty easy but im stuck on 2 things. What vehicle should I take the turbo off of and put on the cruiser? And how does a intercooler work?

Like a trillion threads on turbo for 3bs:D search...

Ask cam.... Think it was a volvo

I run a Garrett 2052, it's an excellent match to the 3B. I purchased it as a turbo kit for Keith (diesel42 here on MUD)

'course I don't have the time or skills to fab my own turbo manifold, but building your own is a great way to go. All things considered, it's a very high satisfaction to effort ratio mod!

Seems easy to make a intercooler... Or just take it off the car im taking the turbo from. I better start collecting parts if i want to drive this thing anytime soon.

I wouldn't make an intercooler... seems like way to much effort considering the price you can get them for off of ebay. After watching cam make an airtank bumper the amount of work to ensure that its actually leak free at pressure seems like too much effort when you can buy them so cheap from china.

Theres one guy who put a volvo intercooler in and it looked like it fit nicely around the 40 rad. I wish I hadn't given mine away when I moved maybe if whoever has it hasn't used it you can bribe it off of them.

I'm running a turbo of an 87 volvo. I think its a t3b0 (T3) it is a 0.43 or something like that I think...

It works great and the fittings were easy enough to source. Look for my turbo build thread someplace in this club forum... I think it was under "looking for fittings" or something like that.

mine was off a volvo as well, think a 740...

Intercoolers are fairly cheap, the volvo one fits not bad for a stock i/c, otherwise ebay is FULL of generic aluminum ones in every size imaginable, pretty cheap and you can pick the one that fits your space best.

My first turbo effort was just a manifold flip and adapter plate. Works just fine, but the nice thing about building a manifold is you can choose where the turbo sits.

Least fun part of the whole process is pulling the oil pan and putting a drain bung into it. bit of a messy ordeal...

Agreed. I looked at using a volvo intercooler on the 60 but the intercooler was going to need some modification to get around the rad and I opted for an ebay unit. Works like a hot damn!

Don't use the vacuum drain... it is not big enough... I tried.

Toshi is on about the vacuum drain for the alternator pump. I agree, dont use it its a waste of time especially if your B is healthy in the oil pressure department. :)

Last but not least, time to whore out my old thread again... lol. Seriously though you should find some useful info there I did my best to load it with info without nerding out too badly. First link is turbo stuff, scroll down a bit and there is intercooler info a couple pages after that. I documented the findings and results of various stages of the build. Where I have it tuned is perfect for me, a balance between performance and reliability in my opinion. Turbo B's are great.

Thanks guys for all the info.... Cant wait to be able to make it up the malahat in 4th

Im running a wrx turbo and homemade manifold and it works great. Hits about 12 psi under normal driving conditions, and will do 17 psi if i stomp on it. The benifit of the wrx turbo is you can get a near new one for about $150 as the subaru guys go bigger and they have a unique mount. If you find my thread on here there is info on what i did.

I looked for one of those and ended up with a twin turbo 300zx, of course only using one of the turbos...

Ooooh, challenge awn, compound turbo like the thread in diesel;)

3b with compound turbo my arse:lol:

Edit, that reminds me of the 3B I drove with a supra turbo, only started working at around 2200rpm..
