I am interested in getting a rooftop tent for my 78 40 series sometime in the future, but I am worried about how much weight the top can realistically hold. What tents are people currently running and what is the best way to mount it to distribute weight, as well as not do any damage to the top.

Do a search here on roof top tents. There was a thread recently with pro and con testimonials from actual rtt owners. I'd link you to it if I knew how.
