We've got several of the Rayovac units (as in your 2nd link). They work great for camping, the low isn't nearly as low as I'd like it (for night light use etc), so of course I hacked ours (changed one of the resistors).

Long runtime, decent even light in all directions and cheap - my wife got them on sale for $18 each a few years ago. The only negative is they use 3 D cells and are quite heavy because of that. Obviously using D's gives them LONG runtime. One could always use the AA eneloops inside D shells.

Of course we also use LED headlamps for normal camp duty.

cheers,
george.

Just HAD to hack into the LED lantern, didn't you :D

in all my years camping, i've yet to have a problem or issues with any source of lighting i've had to use...mainly flashlights and the led lanterns. light is light so you can see your s*** around the tent and camp site. ANY lantern/flashlight from the camping/hardware store will and SHOULD do! lol.

I agree with Romey to a certain degree.......But, last week my LED lantern crapped out on me getting ready for our first trip out this summer. So, after reading this thread and thinking a little about it, I bought a Coleman propane lantern. Wow, I forgot what I was missing. The warm lighting and the hiss of the fuel just brings a campsite into the perfect tone. I do have LED headlights, two flashlights, and a tent lantern that will always be used, but for the main lantern, I'm hooked. I guess it's time to stock up on mantels and an extra globe.

lance,
Yep, I like my usual variety of lights, but the primary light used in camp is my trusty Coleman gas lantern. I now have one of those tripod sky hook things that let you get it up overhead. I get that set up in the center of camp for the major part of the evening in most cases.

It also helps draw the bugs to it and away from lesser light sources, but I suspect it draws bugs in from far away who wouldn't otherwise be there. My guess is it's a wash and sometimes the bugs are interesting.

One of the functional lights i have tried was the Coleman Quad. lasts for days and if someone needs to hit the head they can pull off one of its quad lights. They recharge in the main unit and last for 2-4 hours each on their own.

the only down side is that the main unit takes D cell batteries. But with some tinkering i am sure you could find a way to use lithium batteries for it.
