My thoughts precisely. A lot of amperage struggling to make good contact and making intermittent contact. Also, those crappy Wal-Mart lead terminals crack and break over time because they always seem to be too big for the negative side of the battery. Even when they're ought in pairs. Then you have to WAY overtighten them and they still usually spin a bit. Many people don't realize those terminals ARE NOT meant to be a permanent solution as much as a temporary fix. I am guilty of running one far too long on my cruiser. In fact the last one broke about where yours melted and I put another on. I have a dual battery setup planned at which time I will replace my battery cables and terminals. Seeing this makes me think I should get rid of that terminal immediately.Could be. If it was loose, the current could arc between the battery post and the terminal clamp.
Could explain the popping sound
