‘97 LX 450, gets driven & ‘wheeled occasionally. Last time to do that was over X-mas/NY. Probably got driven end of February, not sure. Wife tries to start it near end of March - no crank, battery at 4.8V. Battery is a 27F X2Power from BatteriesPlus. It’s May now, battery still in the truck, still at ~ 5V, so, didn’t go any lower in 5 weeks? We use those X2Power batteries in several vehicles with good success, usually get ~4 years out of one. They’re advertised with a 48 months replacement warranty. This one I hadn’t written the purchase date on the battery, no sticker either. I’ll investigate whether there’s an undue draw, but my irritation stems from this: fellow at BatteriesPlus determines from the serial number that the battery is still within the warranty period, however, the low voltage indicates abuse, hence they won honor the warranty. I was quite surprised.
News to me, first time I heard that. I’ve brought in discharged batteries before, and usually they first request the battery to be charged with their equipment, and under their supervision. And then a determination is made re warranty procedures. Apparently this has changed.
Well. I request that they try to charge the battery. I get a call this morning that the battery won’t take a charge, it gets to 11.2V, but no capacity to speak of. However, they will make an exception, just this one time, and replace the battery under warranty. I ask about the warranty statement on the website, which says 48 months replacement, and was told that an employee should have explained the warranty details at point of purchase. Needless to say that didn’t happen and they gladly took my money. I got the new battery, so I’m good now.
Maybe it’s the company, maybe it’s that particular store or manager, but if you’re considering purchasing an X2Power with an eye on the 48 months warranty, have a chat in store to have the details of the warranty explained to you before you make a decision.
And just for reference, my K5 (yes, I know, 1985, older vehicle, no alarm system, no radio for the moment, no anything ) has been sitting since Dec 25; X2Power 34/78. 12.6V for the main, 12.2V for (older and perhaps no longer so great) aux; aux battery not connected to the vehicle lest I flip a switch.
Anyways, just a heads-up. I was fine with paying a bit more for that X2Power 48-months warranty. I will certainly reconsider next time I need a new battery.
Cheers, Michael
