I looking for advice on new batteries. Early morning winter temps in my location are commonly -18C and occasionally -30C or lower. The vehicle came with new batteries rated at 550 CCA and 90 RC. These are grossly inadequate for winter here. What do people recommend for reliable winter starting? And how high can I go safely before there are risks to the electrical system?

There is no risk with going too high when it comes to CCA.. the system will take the current it needs, no more.

I have found that the AGM batteries seem to last me quite a while. I believe in on year 6 or 7 with mine. I also keep a smart trickle charger on while I'm not driving it for long periods. Whatever you do, replace both batteries at the same time!

Go for as high a CCA as you can find that fits in the space you have. 550cca is pitiful!
I think i had 950cca in my diesel cruisers.

Group 31 is a heavy duty, commercial vehicle series battery, they will be available with a lot higher cca ratings.
Group 31 is a lot larger than Group 34 (standard size for landcruiser). Group 31 fits, but be careful that your terminal clamps clear the hood.
Mine all cleared no problem, but if you have an aftermarket terminal clamp in use, you might be close.

Also, always match both batteries. They need to be the same capacity, and ratings, and replace both together. If one is weak, they will try to equalise each other rich creates a drain across the batteries. They'll die prematurely.
