Hi all,

Tried this question on the 100 series thread. No luck. Wondering if someone on this thread would have some quick advice.

Purchased a hdj101 over the summer. It is pretty rust free and I live in snowy north east of the us so I am planning on storing her for the winter.

What is the best way to hook up a battery maintainer to the 1hd-FTE? It is a 12v system, so my guess is 1 maintainer. Should I hook it up to the main battery? ( which battery is the main battery?) Or should I hook the positive up to one battery and the negative up to the other?

Any help would be appreciated.

I think you'll do best to run from POS+ of one to the NEG- of the other, as to keep the current moving through both and equalized as much as possible.

Thanks, that makes sense. do you think it matters which battery gets the positive?

I don't think it would make a difference for your case when it comes to just maintaining. I believe I read somewhere that the battey closer to the firewall is the 'main' battery but dont quote me on that. Maybe the EWD has more info.

From the question, I understand you have two batteries. Each battery has different needs. But a maintainer that maintains two batteries, and hook them up individually.

That way each battery gets what it needs. Otherwise, neither will, in the long run.

I have a 24v setup, but whether batteries are in parallel or series, you can use something like this NOCO Genius 2x2:

It’s been working flawlessly for me for two years.

It seems, as per the EWD, that all the loads on the 12v dual battery setups go through a single point. Therefore discharge and charge treats the two batteries as one big battery. So with that logic, a regular maintainer shouldn't cause any issues.

Thanks for all the help. Sounds pretty straightforward to hook it up.

I appreciate the clarity.

If it uses a 24V starter you should put the maintainer on the battery connected to the alternator. If you connect it across both batteries it could fry when the batteries connect in series during cranking.
