I am looking for anew roof top tent. We had a autohome columbia and it was nice. I liked the hard shell and material, but it did not have too much room.
Anyone has a Baroud one? They have the V folding one that has more head room. And the solar powered vent in it.
Any feedback would be appreciated. On any tent option, really. But it has to hold up to really high, gusty winds, as most of our camping is in Baja. So please don't try to talk me into a $300 chinese POS. I'd rather pay a lot for a great product, than a little for something that does not hold up.
Cheers and thanks

I have one and i love it. I do see there is one report on here with a bad review because the shell has cracks in it and they are claiming that the customer service isn't stepping up.... i would like to see how that turns out.

Back to mine... I love it! Here is my quick pros and cons...

Pros:
Light weight and aerodynamic.
Sets up in seconds.
the tent material is very nice. Durable and water proof even if you are pressing against it. It also has some reflective stuff in it and i've noticed in the extreme heat it's not too bad in there.
The fan, i think works. I can't feel any air coming in from it, but i have noticed when it's running i don't wake up with a lot of moisture inside the tent, so i assume it works.
The mattress is very comfortable.
The light inside works VERY well.

Cons:
I don't like the velcro at the bottom of the doors and windows. I think they should be zippered.
It's too short for me and i'm 6'1".... Let me explain a little, it's not that i'm cramped, i fit in the tent fine, but, my pillow is against one side and the tip of my sleeping bag is touching the other side. I'm not mashing, but touching. It doesn't affect my sleep but if anyone was taller than me i think it would be an issue. If it were about 3 inches longer it would be perfect.
The struts that deploy the tent are very strong... this is good when it's setting up, but makes it a little difficult when pulling it back down to close.
The mosquito netting needs to be a little smaller... no-see-ums can get through in my experience.

Regarding the wind, i was really impressed with it in the wind. I have slept on the outer banks of NC for a few weekends and it's pretty windy there. It was very sturdy, no flopping or flapping fabric. Also i slept in it in a valley in Moab where the wind was ripping through there at over 30 mph and it did great. That's the plus of the heavy duty struts holding the tent upright.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

that's a cool one. makes sense with that wrap around awning. but i'm sure shipping from africa will be a deal breaker.

here's that other clamshell type, posted here before but not sure if many have this particular RTT.

from what i've read, parts of the james baroud tents are from china (assembled in portugal) so you might have a half POS rtt, lol.

What you've read has NOT be substantiated yet by the individual making that claim.

Is the fan made in china or the light, probably. The struts maybe. Fabric and shell doubtful.

Regardless, I've got a lot of top notch s*** made in China. Pretty pointless argument anymore IMHO.

My review of the product is pretty much 100% in line with what concretejungle stated above.

ahh, okay, fair enough (but I did say "I read" and "might" hehe). but yeah, pointless argument, agreed (and there's other threads for it!). guess it always boils down to you get what you pay for, and everyone's willing to take different risks based on budgets. :) eitherway, hoping to see more options for clam shell type of RTT's as there's a bunch of the fold out ones already, maybe the market is getting saturated, or maybe not?

I recently purchased the Featherlite from Front Runner - great quality!

I've had a Roost for over 3 years now. What I like about this unit is that I only lost about 1 mpg on long road trips. Also it will set up in about a couple of minutes and put away( with one person cut you a piece of 4" board about 12" long) in less than 5. It's made very durable, canvas I believe with 3 doors and full venting on them. Think mine weighed out about 120 lbs. We kept ours on top for about year and never delt with water intrusion, just a bit of sand from being at the beach a lot in the fall. I would pay extra and get the 3 " pad, very comfy.
