i took my 40 out to gilmer texas to run barnwell mountain. while i was out there, i somewhat abused my truck. heres what went wrong.

Front drivers steering knuckle went out, started bleeding knuckle fluid out on all sides.

engine i believe has lost all compression, it got me home (cause its a cruiser) but she would backfire and barey idle, the oil smells like fuel, (thinking rings went bad, but could be cause by bad pcv valve), it was running very rough at the time.

now im thinking about rebuilding the engine, who do you sudgest i get my rebuild kits from. for both the knuckle rebuilds and the engine rebuild.

**I lived in/drove around Texas for about a year and a half and never once saw a mountain, but I digress....

**Post up some pictures so we can see the knuckle carnage (and offer up ideas).

**Losing all compression would make for a loooong drive home. Sounds like you may have lost the fuel pump diaphragm (assuming you still have a block-mounted mechanical pump).

**Engine rebuild: confirm the need. Drain/renew engine oil and filter, check engine tune-up specs, and check compression/leak down test.

**Knuckle rebuild: see above suggestion.

Good luck!

I'd like to know this as well, I dont think i will be doing a complete rebuild, but if the price is right. I am in fort worth, just getting started with my 40, we'll have to get together sometime. Plan to make a trip to gilmer at some point.

For the knuckle rebuild kit go to Cruiseroutfitters.com.

As far as the engine goes, I don't think I'd start looking at rebuild kits yet. Troubleshoot it further and see what's really wrong. It could just be a vacuum leak or something simple.

Get a kit from Kurt at CruiserOutfitters ...

Do a compression test first, the gas smell in the oil is probably a leaking fuel pump. The spuddering could be many things, always check it out before thinking dooms-day ;)
