Is this something a stock 60 would be able to do? Been wanting to take the wife to some of those remote hot springs.

The camp they went to has to be accessed from HWY 89, IIRC Chicago did it in a stock FJ62. But according to his report the trail might be a bit more difficult now. If you came in from the HWY 395 side it would be easy to get to the hot springs, however the camping there is not as nice as the spot Chicago went to.

Other hot springs you might look at are Soldier Meadows hot springs or Double Hot springs up on the Black Rock Plya. Both are easy to access in a stock rig.

To access Barney Riley you would go south almost to Topaz Lake then take Levithan Mine Road to the Carson river.

Soldier Meadows and Double Hot Springs are both north of Gerlach. Tons of information on the web about both, google is your friend. ;)

Chuck Dodd's Guide to Getting Around in the Black Rock Desert and High Rock Canyon is a great resource.

They usually have it in stock at Barnes and Noble as well.

You might also want to look at this thread which is stuck to the top of the forum

Lots of good reading and information sources there.

Im late to this party..
We did Laurel Lakes and this trail on 07.24.2013.
The mid section on the Barney Riley trail is pretty steep and it was a bear climbing out of it with my 60 (but I dont have much experience, so take it for what is worth). On the way out, like Chicago, I got caught on a boulder step and started to slide sideways  (steep grade), but eventually made it up that one obstacle.

We got to the hot springs to find no one else around... It was a great reward to an adventurous ride.:bounce::bounce:
